You do realize that April 1st isn't over yet, right? This isn't V for Vendetta, attacks don't have to happen as the clock strikes 12. And the virus is real, seeing as people got the first three version alright. It's the fourth stage that got people worried about happening today. I declare no "it WAS a joke" threads until it is April 2nd in all parts of the world.

I don't know about the virus being fake, but the date was.

I still stick to my thought that it is the same as that mass text that went out around the U.S. to women about a gang initiaion about to take place at walmart that involves the death of three women. Twas funny.

No, the Conficker C worm is real. Here is one of many articles released today about it.
Conficker virus could steal your personal data on April Fool's
Now, incase you don't feel like reading all that (I did though, quite interesting) let me sum it up, and through in other information I have discovered.

Even if you run malware protection and anti-virus programs through your computer, there is a good chance that they will miss this worm. It is very good at avoiding detection, which is what makes it advanced. Also, it is currently lying dormant. It's been spreading to comptures through networks through months now, but hasn't done anything until today. Today it was going to ask what it is supposed to do, but whether or not it actually has done such is not quite known. In any case, even if it got it's instructions for the next plan of attack, it won't be doing anything more today.
However, what will it do? That's uknown, but do not be afraid by the constant reference to Doomsday virus. Worst case scenerio, it takes your personal information. This conclusion has been arrived at due to the fact that this virus can follow keystrokes, meaning it can find out your password to bank accounts should you type them in, etc. Now that is still pretty bad, but not as bad as some people make this out to be. Also, this virus has infected millions of computers, but that isn't as bad as it sounds either. Many computer experts say that due to its recent publicity, the hackers have backed down and since have abandoned ship. Others say that since they infected so many computers, the hackers have no clue what to do with their amassed firepower and are simply letting it go. But in any case, you probably don't have to fear. These people could care less about the average Joe's information. No, if this virus should do anything with private information, it will be that of businesses, since they run on large networks.
So out of the many computers infected, the only computers that will foresee the future implications of this virus will more than likely number in a small percent of the total infected. So don't worry, us here at Forgehub have little to fear. However, there are some things you should know to prevent attracting this virus, for it is always better safe than sorry.

1)Do not download or buy malware protection or anything of the sorts except from trusted sites, such as Norton or Microsoft. You can use this here tool. If it doesn't get the virus, chances are you don't have it, so don't worry about going to find other methods of removal. Malicious Software Removal Tool
    2) If you do think you have the virus, go to sites such as Norton's home site. This virus is known to block things that could remove it. If you can see the site, you're fine. If you can't, then you might be screwed so go contant an IR guy.
    3) Due to the mass publicity of this virus, with almost 43 million google searches of it a day, there is a new form of "viral marketing" to spread it. Curious about the virus? Be wary. When googling it, look for only trusted sites and sources. There have been many fake sites now created that will imediately infect your computer upon opening up the web page.
    4) Be smart. The internet is a minefield, but as long as you know where to step you will be fine. Don't do anything that is deemed stupid or un-safe on the internet.

EDIT: Also for the rumors of the creator being Russian, here is some light on that. I actually can't find an article on the kid to save my life, so if someone can link me that would be great. But basically, many suspect this 14 year old kid in Russia and friends to be behind the creation of this virus. They have been known to hack and skim many US dollars from banks and businesses, transferring it over to Russia. Because of this, they have been hailed hero's of sorts in their country, and therefore there isn't much that can be done about it.
