Bungie 500 Created by Glimflicker Mongoose Racing. These two words can scatter members of a Custom Game party quicker than a few hundred zombie games. Players are allowed to stand in the goal area and get free points every 15 or 30 seconds, so why bother racing? Besides, the tracks aren't even laid out well enough to easily determine where to go--and avoiding short cuts while also following honor rules? Please. After a lot of thought, effort, testing (why are you all so good at breaking maps), and a complete rebuild, a possible answer has emerged: The Bungie 500 (I figured they needed some props for the awesome Forge additions in Foundry, even if everyone seems to be growing weary of it already). Map Description: Originally designed as a floating oval track in the sky, several revisions have resulted from Forge, Foundry and VIP Variant limitations to produce what you see today. The main things accomplished with this map are: No driveable shortcuts exist. Falling from the second level to the floor isn't possible except at the transition entering Turn 4. Falling into the Start/Finish line from the second floor isn't possible due to the man cannon placement. The racing line is clearly marked and intuitive. I'm still contemplating what to do (if anything) for the turns on the ground floor. I would love feedback on this. Crossing the Start/Finish line on foot teleports the player into a penalty box with fusion coils for him/her to commit suicide with (note that the VIP variant penalizes suicides with a single lap penalty and a 30-second respawn timer). Driving through the Start/Finish line multiple times without completing laps isn't possible due to the man cannon placement. Teleporters are available on the ground level to take you back to the starting area, should you be separated from your 'goose by an overzealous NASCAR fan. The only teleporters that place you in the penalty box are the four inside the Start/Finish line goal area. VIP (Race) Variant: First player to complete 20 laps wins Suicides incur a 30 second respawn penalty and a one lap (-1 score) penalty. In conjunction with teleporters inside the Start/Finish line goal area, this prevents players from easily completing laps on foot. Killing VIPs incurs a one lap (-1 score) penalty. Players only inflict 25% of normal damage (lowest available above 0% to allow players to suicide when placed in the penalty box) Players have 200% damage resistance. With the 25% damage modifier, this makes griefing other players very hard (though not impossible ) while still allowing penalty box suicides. There is a 15 minute round timer. Map Start: Racing up the ramp into the first turn. Turns 1 and 2 with the Penalty Box serving two uses as part of the wall. View of the first turn from behind the fence wall. View of turn 2 and the entry for turn 3 with the Start/Finish line and man cannon exit below. View of the 45° banked turn 3 over the starting area. The man cannons below the entrance to turn 3 do not affect the racing line. Reverse view of the entry to turn 3 and the start/finish area. View of turn 1 and the turn 3 exit going behind the man cannon retainment wall. The signs above the double fence wall are to prevent players from hitting multiple man cannons to take a short cut over the wall. View of how the turn 3 exit levels out from the 45° banking and begins downwards towards the bottom level of the track. The Start/Finish line: Man Cannons prevent players from driving through the goal area multiple times without completing another lap, or entering the goal area from the above level. Teleporters prevent players from going through the goal area on foot. The receiver node for these teleporters is in a penalty box, an upside-down fence-box between turns one and two with fusion coils inside for the player to commit suicide with. View of a player exiting the man cannons below two players racing on the upper level. Five players decided to cross the start/finish line at about the same time and are hurtling towards turn 1. View of the transition from turn 3 to the bottom level and turn 4. The teleporter visible on the inside of the turn takes players back to the starting area--just in case they are without a mongoose. Reverse view of the transition to the lower level. Early braking for the turn offers great passing opportunities here. Doriftu! View of turn 5 and the underbelly of the upper level. The teleporter visible on the inside of the turn also takes players back to the starting area. Download Bungie 500 Download VIP Variant
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined Wow, this looks like alot of fun. Also, being from Indianapolis i appreciate the name more than most.
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined Not entirely original (referring to banked turns, not mongoose racing), but what the hell. They were recent. Good ideas on eliminating honour rules, the concept is fine but I haven't tried it so I can't say whether it can be broken. Also your item placement looks very good, well done. Precision to that extent is rare amongst these submissions... and so I'm going to download this. That is also rare. More thoughts later.
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined this actually looks like a well thought out race map, good work, i'll give it a try.
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined Looks nice! in the que... Btw, thanks for the tips in my post....
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined Well, if we've all gone and downloaded, why don't we try it out by having a race this evening?
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined Surprisingly a Racetrack caught my attention. I congratulate you on a clever elimination of honor rules. Keep up the good work. And by the way, me complimenting a Racetrack is a NEVER kinda thing. Be happy...
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined Wow. This actually is a decent race map. And for the first time for a race map... *Queued*
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined I personally got the idea for banked turns from a lifetime of watching races, so I wasn't trying to take credit for anything there! Seriously though, I've seen a few maps in Foundry with banked turns trickling out recently, but I didn't want to release my map prematurely to push one feature rather than a whole quality package. I am quite picky about my item placement, and it's usually at the frustration of my friends that I'm forging with at the time--glad somebody actually likes it! I feel that the map is quite solid in its current state, but I have a sinking suspicion that there is still a workaround or two for some of the measures I have implemented. I know that there is still a possible glitch of sorts with the scoring, though: If you cross the Start/Finish line as the territory is "moving," it is possible to get credit for two laps at once. Bungie could fix this by supporting zero width goal points for VIP variants, but even though they can be created, they don't trigger scoring when driven through. There is also a drawback due to the penalty box implementation I chose. If you cross the man cannons at the Start/Finish line incorrectly (it is actually very hard to do unless you're trying with the recent changes made to the map), you will get caught under the banked turn, dismount the Mongoose, and be teleported into the penalty box. I've almost got a fix for this in place, but I'm still testing it. I'll be more than happy to give a tour to everyone interested when I get on this evening.
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined I too was impressed with the object placement... I'm glad there are people in our community that I don't have to teach perfection.
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined Haha at committing suicide in the penalty box. This looks like a great race map.
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined Wow. Not only does this map look AWESOME, but your presentation is great. Nicely done.
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined By the way, I'm definitely up for some racing with you guys.
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined One of my best friends is notorious for being able to break custom maps and gametypes that we play. While I was working on the map, I kept thinking things like to myself: "Dave's going to be able to get around this. Dave's going to be able to take a shortcut here. Dave's going to be able to get credit for multiple laps." When I thought of the penalty box for crossing the Start/Finish line on foot, I was so proud. It wasn't until another buddy suggested the fusion coil suicide addition that it became the official "Anti-Dave Device.â„¢" We must have laughed a good five minutes just imagining the thought process that people would go through when they were teleported into the penalty box: Ha! I can still walk through the start finish line quicker than people can race a lap. Some ungriefable map this is. Hmmm. What just happened? GUYS! I'm stuck in this box, can anybody help? What exactly is the point of this gametype? ::shoots Pistol at Mongeese passing by:: Fusion Coils? Hey, I can get out! 30 seconds? Whoever made this is a ****, but I'll be damned if I do that again. Heh. Thanks for the feedback so far guys. I'm curious to see what you think when you've given it a real shakedown. Also, I posted a few more screenshots of the bottom level in my Gallery and linked them in the OP.
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined I just have to say I love that description you just gave. I wish that people would just play games the way they where designed. But luckily we have our tricks and such to keep people from being able to ruin a game. I took a run on this track last night and I'm glad I downloaded it! Good job ;D
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined Holy crap this looks good. Very clever use of the teleporters on the start line, love the consequences Queued. ~Jakester1024
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined This one does look a little different than other racing maps... Downloading now... -Donuts
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined Thanks for the map, a friend and I went through it last night and really enjoyed it. I'll be holding onto this one. I can only imagine how it plays with a bunch of people, it must be insane!
Re: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined Ok. So I downloaded this map, right? MAN it's good. All the turns are perfect, the placement and angle of the high-speed curve is great, and although racing tracks are taboo, I wouldn't be surprised if this made frontpage.
