currently i am reading "The Giver" by Lois Lowry.
every citizen is given a spouce given a boy and a girl and a job that they will have for the rest of their live. and their are a couple of rules that i have seen so far and if you break these rules then you are punished and if you break 3 rules then you are "released" which means you are kicked out of the community.
here are the rules I've seen so far

    1. no aircraft may fly over the comunity.
    2. a brother a sister a dad and a mom, that is it.
    3. you may not keep your feelings secret. (feeling sharing at the end of the day.)
    4. nurturers may not look at the list of newborns before the ceremony. (you need to read the book to get this rule.)
    5. a child will receive a bike at age nine and may not ride a bike before-hand.

so what do you think of this society? if you have read the book before then please post because you could give a good response.

I read it in Grade 7. It reminded me of the movie, "The Island." Obvious differences being that they were clones of rich people instead of a socially controlled society. Everyone was told that they would be shipped off to some spectacular paradise, or 'Released' in the book, which simply turned out to be << SPOILERS! >>. So the main characters << SPOILERS! >>, eventually learning what they really are.

I read this in 7th? Grade actually. From what I remember, everything was in Black and White. Life seemed too simple to really comprehend. I could not imagine living in "The Giver" It's just a barred off community that doesn't go anywhere, just the same thing over and over.

I couldn't live in a world like that. The whole point of democracy is to empower the people in their own way, not to force them to behave a certain way.
