The US government is willing to turn over most anything to the private sector, allegedly because it's too much work and money for them to do adequately. The private sector then, predictably, takes it's new enterprise and shakes it for money. It happens over and over and over again.

There are now privately operated prisons, and guess what? They are lobbying our lawmakers for longer sentences, in order to increase the profits they can rake in. So typical.

The old saying that money is the root of all that's evil is to simplistic for my taste. But I strongly feel that the profit motive, which is the basis for just about every business enterprise that operates in the capitalist system, is a cancer. It's not killing us, but does make living in the world suck way more than it needs to, and in ways that most of us are oblivious to.

"One in 100 Americans is in jail."

Disgraceful. IMO that is a clear sign of broken society.
