I strongly feel you do not need to interlock unless necessary in Sandbox. I would venture as much to say I am a knowledgeable and skilled forger. In Sandbox I haven't interlocked in my current project unless of course I need to in order to make things fit. The "bumps" are still there regardless of whether or not I interlock. Also I believe, at least in my opinion, that non-interlocked sections in Sandbox can look better than interlocked ones. The first reason being that in real life, stone structures such as Pyramids have tiny gaps where the blocks are put together. Secondly because in Sandbox forging often times is so precise that you get the "flicker" effect more often. But, by all means don't let that stop you from interlocking. It is a great technique and should be used at the user's discretion. I just prefer to make Forge simple and as long as it plays well, I'm fine.
I just interlocked in Sandbox, and I almost feel dirty. But it was for a half box height ramp, and I didn't want to use a wedge, huge for aesthetic reasons.
As seems to be the resounding cry, interlocking hasn't been seen much on Sandbox maps because interlocking isn't entirely necessary on Sandbox. I'm a bit old-fashioned, to where I won't interlock things that don't need to be interlocked, and on Sandbox the physical geometries of the pieces are built to line up perfectly. On Foundry, all of the boxes have that annoying bevel on them, and the walls are just a little bit taller than the boxes. Additionally, you could never get pieces to be perfectly flush with one another. On Sandbox, this is a non-issue. With a bit of coaxing, pieces actually line up fairly perfectly, allowing for relatively seamless running surfaces and near perfection. There's also the fact that pieces are built to overlap each other just enough with their physical models to make interlocking unnecessary if you don't need an abstract shape (and with the variety of shape they've provided, not many people have needed abstract shapes yet). I have no doubt that when people get used to Sandbox, we'll see more and more amazing maps coming out. Already I've got a handful of ideas, and am very excited that Spring Break is next week, so I'll have that much more time to forge and turn these dreams into virtual reality (even though I know I should be getting ahead on homework, I'd much rather spend my time implementing my ideas).
Interlocking looks super ugly on Sandbox most of the time. Depending on what objects you are interlocking. But Double Blocks really don't need interlocking. Interlocking them results in a really ugly flicker and looks bad. There is still bumps regardless of wether or not you interlock.
I am currently working on a map on sandbox and interlocking is useful but not necessary. Plus the trick wall placement to smooth the double boxes doesn't work and you will get the small bump anyway. (as the person above just posted). The bump in not a big problem, you will only notice it if you look at the ground when going over the bump. When play testing I didn't notice it at all and you definitely when your in the middle of the game. I think that that problem foundry had, are either gone or minute in sandbox. Also if you haven't got the maps you really can't say anything on the matter
I used to interlock a whole lot in Foundry, it was a big pain in the ---. I came up with awesome maps in Foundry with interlocking but it makes forging kinda boring. In Sandbox, maps are much easier to make, and it makes forge all that much better. Making it how forge is supposed to be, other then glitching maps, making them lag more. Also like said before, Interlocking isn't necessary on Sandbox unless you need to fit a special piece into the map. I personally love most of the Sandbox maps I have seen so far. They look fantastic and no interlocking. Check a couple out in the competitive maps section.
