There are some people *cough*Diz*cough*, who believe that the focal point of a signature should never be in the center of the signature.

IMO, there are many many different techniques and styles used to create signatures. A good example would be a symmetrical signature. These types of sigs would almost undoubtedly have their focal point in the center.

Art critique is also based on opinion. What is beautiful to one person may not be beautiful to the next. So, you cannot state a fact that signatures that place their focal point in the middle do not look good.

With that being said, what are the opinions of some of the more talented artists on FH?

Thanks for making this because I was going to make a sig where the focal would be in the center, but i've read and heard a lot that it shouldn't.

If you think that it would turn out good, then I would say go for it. Although, I'm not very experienced in graphic design.

Sorry, but i think focal points should try not to be in the center. It makes them look boring, and just very dull. ALso, i have never even heard of a symetrical signature, but i bet they are pretty bland. SOmething that is the same on the left as it is on the right is just very boring, IMO.

Also, odd thread coming from someone who doesn't make sigs.

No. NEVER put the focal in the center. It looks bad. Use the rule of thirds.

i.e. divide the image into three sections vertically and horizontally and place the focal where two corners of these sections meet.

I was just talking about it with Diz in another thread, and seeing as how it was distracting from the thread's original purpose, I created a place where we could discuss it.

i do appreciate the rule of thirds, and it would be hard to make an "interesting" symmetrical signature, i just don't think it should be said to NEVER have the focal point in the center. In fact, it makes it more of a challenge to make a good signature like that. So I'd actually encourage for you to try to make a few good sigs ignoring the rule of thirds and using the center as the focal point.

I think I'll try it once and post it if I think it looks alright. And please don't hate it just because it's centered.

Oh and I agree a lot with the rule of thirds considering I take all art classes in school. It's just that sometimes I feel the need to change it up a bit.

lockdown, your current's focal point is in the centre, so is yours hari.

you people really should think about what youre saying before you blabber.

focal point should be wherever you can fit it, as long as you make it look interesting, do something creative with it, there shouldnt be a problem. conventions are there just as guidelines.

Theirs aren't centered. Rule of thirds is where their focal points are.
If they moved it over a little then their sigs would be centered.

They still don't use the "rule of thirds" exactly, however. They're pretty danged close to center, too.

Hari's sig is pretty close, but Lock's is not close at all.

Yes but it isnt in the center. Its not exactly centered. Thats the point. My sig probably could have been better if it was more to the side. Its my mistake. But still, take my advice. Dont put anything exactly in the center.

First of all, it makes the signature look very...awkward, I guess you could put it.

It makes it look boring, and it detracts from the focal itself. It makes your eyes look elsewhere.

I think we should have a little contest where the sig's focal has to be in the center, I kind of want to see what everyone does.

Thats too restricting. All the sigs would look boring and bad.

exactly what i want to do.

the rule of thirds is not used because everything that is made by it looks better than if the focal point was in the center. It is because people feel it is easier to make something look good by using this rule. I say, challenge yourself and make something look good by using the center as the focal point.

I wouldn't want to make a sig like that. It would detract from everything else. Flow would be more difficult and all of the attention would go to the center. You wouldn't look at anything else. Might as well just paste a render on a white background.

I'll suggest it for SOTW, although I'm not sure if too many people would want to participate in it.
