I just had this really sweet idea a few days ago while talking to some friends. The conversation kind of went something like this. -Yeah the maps are kind of getting boring now. -Remember when cod5 just came out? And you didn't know where everything was so it was more fun, and the maps seemed HUGE? -I think the first time you play on a multiplayer map is the best because then it's like being dropped somewhere that you're supposed to fight in that you don't really know. Kind of like how it would really be like in WWII. -It'd be great if they made up some kind of random map generator in the future. And from there we went on to figure out how it'd work. A random map generator would have to use a puzzle kind of system. With pieces that are interchangeable, and set to work with 100 or so different set terrains. Maybe a thousand or so different pieces. The terrains would have "spots" that the "pieces" could fit, and depending on which terrain was being used the pieces would know which place it could potentially fit and randomly chose one. Say piece A. Is a small square. Piece B. is a small triangle. And piece C is a small trapezoid. Say terrain 1 is a square. Piece A. and B. could be used on this map in 5 spots total, each having 1 distinctly for each of them (or the other 1000 or so pieces that are to be picked from) and 3 they share. Say piece C. cannot be used. Terrain A. and B. would be mixed up and placed on terrain 1, and C. would be thrown out, creating a random map. Say Terrain 2 is a trapezoid. Pieces A. B. and C. can all be used on this map. The three are chosen as pieces to be used on the terrain. Piece B. and piece C. can be interchanged on 2 different spots and the map would still work while piece A can be used on any spot, this creates randomness. Pieces would consist of buildings, rock formations, hills, woods, and ect. Just like you see in far cry 2 they'd be premade but many many maps could be made from them. Another idea we had was by utilizing a program like Google Earth, maps could be created from the real earth and played on, but the random generator would take care of, and fill in any buildings/areas that it could not see inside of. I really doubt that any of this would be possible in any less than 50 years into the future. I just thought it was a cool idea.
Wow. I really love this idea and it would make any game a lot more skill based rather than camping and waiting. But like you said, doubtful of it to happen, but would definatly be awesome
Very complicated post, but a very good idea. The only annoyance is that it's beyond the limits of forge Far Cry 2 editor maybe?
Just look at how Diablo does it. That uses a Random Dungeon Generator. Granted a Dungeon is probably a lot easier to make but that same theory works in Diablo as it could if translated into an FPS map.
id say it could easily be done within 50 years. maybe 5 years for it to be decent. less than a year for a "random map generator", but it wouldnt be very good. it could be done. but it would be very complicated and probably would not work very well in a fast paced multiplayer system. maybe 8-10 years it would be able to work well.
Sounds like a good idea I would totally love this. But there would be bugged out the butt if the made i.e. Under and out of map, camping, floating. But I still would like to see this done.
I actually came across a map that was to be played with the peasant hunt gametype. The walls spawned at random and were never exactly in the same place. i figured out how he did it and i thought it was awesome.
Lol but knowing that its COD5, people would still be glitching under the maps, so it would suck. haha but no yeah that would be sweet. I know what you guys are saying with AZN FTW and I don't think thats the same cause even that is predictable to a certain extent. i don't think its that far in the future, Command and Conquer had a pretty good random map generator. Granted that was RTS and not a FPS, but in a game like call of duty where there aren't weapon spawns I could see it working out. I think first and foremost, however, call of duty should give an actual map making option. far cry has a great one, but then gameplay in far cry isn't realistic or fun enough to support it (it takes friggin so many shots to kill someone).
They actually have the coding skills for this now I believe. Take Age of Mythology for example. It's an old game, yet at the same time it has a random map generator. Granted your looking from above instead, it still follows the same princibles. I'm sure sooner or later we will see this idea incorporated into an fps game.
