There are also ways that you can get the APC into the pit. Kinda complicated, so go to YouTube.com as the previous poster said

I do think it's a bit tricker than that, I believe you have to fuse the barriers with the warthog. However, thanks for the link to that video, the people who created that video also have many, many others with a lot of interesting videos that I can use in my machinima.
