The creature, caught on video by a remote-controlled device owned by Shell Oil, was spotted last November roughly a mile and a half below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico, according to a report in Britain's Telegraph. First identified ten years ago, the magnapinna squid has long tentacles that hang at right angles from "arms" that jut out from its body. Scientists are still unsure what function the elbows serve, with some suggesting they help prevent the tentacles from getting tangled when trawling for food. Footage of the rare squid had been circulating among oil industry employees for months, but became public after a recent report in National Geographic. The magnapinna squid has never been filmed at a drilling site before, and has only been caught on camera a few times. I think that was the camera jerking around. But yeah, it's always cool to find something new. Yay for more calamari!
That just goes to show how little we know about the ocean. New creatures being discovered like this is wierd in a way. I know little about our planet yet still want to explore other planets.
Isn't the statistic about 98% of the deep oceans are not explored? I'm sure there are many Cloverfield-like creatures down there.
I find the deep ocean very fascinating, even more so than space. It's just that being here on earth, and having things we can deem "alien" is so interesting. Living on the planet for 1000's of years and not discovering, or not recording a creature, and than find it years later is so interesting. I would love to specialize in this sort of field. I once read a book where it was the characters job to study marine life and he had a tv show and stuff. It was a Dan Brown book, forget exactly what it was called though.
I heard about this thing before. search on google and you'll find lots of info on it. Well not the usual info like the on es you would get if it were like a donkey or something.
wait did you say a squid with eight legs, that is what the flood guys look like in halo then tiny ones awwww **** we are being invaded by the flood head for the hill men!
After taking a closer look at the video, I noticed a few things. The date is from November 11, 2007, so does that mean someone was hiding this video from us or is it suppose to say 2008? The depth is just under 8,000 feet. It also shows the longitude and latitude if anyone wants to look it up
Ahhh, I also like to see these kind of videos. It's always cool to discover a new species. Really shows we don't know as much about this planet as we think we do. Next what I want to see is footage of a megalodon, now that would fascinate me. Nice find dude.
