We sure as heck haven’t seen as many wide-eyed onlookers for a car here before. “Does it fly?” asked one of the dozens of New Yorkers crammed outside the Hearst Tower as the Aptera Typ-1e electric vehicle pulled up to accept its Breakthrough Award. No, the Aptera doesn’t fly, but it can hit 120 miles per gallon right now, and it’s headed for production this fall. We already took the first Aptera test drive last December, so we let our Jalopnik buddy Ray Wert sit shotgun for a trip around the block as the aerodynamically awesome car, on its first trip to the East Coast, made its way around the corner to tonight’s Breakthrough Conference and Awards Presentation, where other winners in alternative energy—as well as space, appropriate technology and much more—are already wowing the crowds. Even legendary astronaut and PM editorial advisory board member Buzz Aldrin walked away impressed. See his and the Big Apple’s reaction with the gallery at left, and stay tuned for much more live coverage right here. —Matt Sullivan Srsly.
i dun know... id like to know though cause my dad is getting a new car soon and Im gonna tell him to get this one... XD
Personally I do not like this car. Mainly because of the space in the interior. It just does not appeal to me how the inside is kind of like an egg. The gad mileage is great though!
it looks like a giant sperm cell no offense. I can tell my Girl friend will be buying one... wait... nvm. Other thank that 120 mpg? It could look like a giant D*ck and i would still drive it. man thats incredible. I actually saw this on the news but thanks for sharing it with the community
Really, I hope in the near future not everyone is driving something like that. I am so but no dice. Great gas mileage, but it is far to awkward on the road. I can see car accidents in that thing will be interesting. Or maybe I am being ignorant, meh.
meh, the Tesla Roadster is much cooler. The Roadster is 100% electric, has a range of 220 miles, regenerative braking, all the bells and whistles.. oh and did I mention the 3.9second 0 to 60? It blows the doors off the Ferrari f440, with a guilt free conscience. ...And the Fisker Karma The Karma is a hybrid, tho still very very sleek and cool. Sorry, Im in a marketing class and my project, in short, is to form a marketing plan for the tesla. Its a bad ass car.
Sorry Piggy that thing looks retarded. Even Anime doesn't have vehicles that ridicules in it anymore. The car Lights posted however is a thing of beauty. Even the four door.
I think this car is a bit too unsafe... Look at the front wheels... What happens if the car crashes? I think I would not want to sit in there...
That looks really sick and especially with the miles per gallon. But does it drive well? I guess we will have to wait and see.
I would def. wait for more of these electric cars to hit the market. As new cars tend to have many defects and kinks to workout. Especially since this will be one of the more affordable first electric cars. Looks weird, great MPG.
The Aptera is about the price of a Toyota Prius at $27,000. at the base list price that is current. I myself am 2505 on the list to buy one. For $500. you can reserve one of these. The deposit is non binding and 100% refundable. If you had $500. in the bank, you might get 2% interest or $10. in interest in one year. If you want to buy one or make a statement, how cheap is that? I ride in the other extremes! A Ford Ranger pickup for business and a 1996 Geo Metro, 3 cylinder, 5 speed that gets 60 mpg when I drive very easy. The Aptera will get me 130-330 depending on my use of plug-in power vs fuel. Most business drivers drive or commute alone, so the 2 seater issue depends on your driving habits. Having ridden motorcycles, this is safer, warmer and I can stay dry. If you drive enough miles there is a practical side to buying one. fincenMIB
I have gear that keeps me 100% dry no matter how hard it is raining. I've had one crash in 7 years of riding and I came away with no injuries whatsoever even though I hit the road at 90 miles per hour. My rain gear also keeps me perfectly warm. This thing looks like it would crush you in the first impact, and would not be able to handle for **** to avoid a crash in the first place. One sharp turn and it looks like it would topple over. (anyone remember three wheeled ATVs?) I'll keep my bike thanks. I feel safer when the limits of the vehicle I'm in control of exceed my own.
Blech. It looks horrible... I guess it is efficient but... Who would want to?... Nevermind, Forgehubbers. Definitely.
