im at lvl 55 on COD4 and no option to prestige.

You must go through one more level of experience. Then, go into the barracks and click the "Prestige Mode" Tab.

Makes you level 1, which means all your weapons, perks, and challenges magically vanish and all you get is a shiny emblem.

Yes. You lose everything. Even custom slots. You have to go through the whole level progression again. I would say it's a good idea to go through prestige mode once. You were a novice when you first played, but now you can go through the whole progression with more skill and try to get as many challenges as you want. I dont see the point of doing it more than once, but some people would want to do that.

kinda fun when u are better skilled with older weapons

 

Its rarely worth going prestige. I don't see a point except that it gives you a reason to keep playing after you hit the top.
