Want to blast that alien or lift that virtual boulder? Think hard. Systems with motion-controlled gaming, such as the Nintendo Wii, are all the rage but new technology heading for consumers this year goes further, sensing facial expressions, emotions and even thoughts. Focus your mind to cast a magic spell. Smile or wink and your on-screen avatar does the same. Get mellow and background music matches your mood. So what if someone who is special needs wants to play? Or is that out of the question lol JK But i dont think this will work, as complex as the human brain is, they could come close, but this will never work without some flaws.
Setup The great thing is that it is configured to each players mind. I saw a television program about it and they explained that there is a setup process when you first plug in with a new user. There is a box on the screen in the center and a voice asks you to picture the box moving up.....and then down.......away from you...........and toward you. After each movement the controller records an image of you brain waves while you were trying to move the box in any specific direction. You can also make the box grow in size or even disappear. Various snapshots of different moods are taken as well. Once the setup is complete the controller is ready for the next time you want to make an object move right. It matches it up with the brain waves from the previous time you wanted that movement and the box moves right. The video showed some really interesting game demos where you were able to manipulate all kinds of things in an environment by simply thinking about it. Can't find the video though.....
Actually, I've seen some video demonstrations of this type of technology. It was still quite primitive in what it could do, and it took about an hour for the testers to get a hold of operating it properly, but it was surprisingly accurate in its operation. A few more years of R&D could lead to a future of gaming like this. Could be awesome.
That's great and all, but this is getting creepy. I wouldn't be surprised if someone hacked this to make it for other purposes. This is a good though, because some people have trouble with playing games, and will get buttons mixed up. The thing I'm most concerned about is how it will mess up. The controller will screw up, and fixing it will cost a lot of doe.
Brain waves..... I guess there won't be one of these in the playboy mansion then, not much thinking going on there. I don't know if this will be use a lot but it is definitely cool.
I saw this like a few months ago on daily planet. As far as I know, things aren't advanced to the point where thoughts actually control anything. This is based off emotional stress changes which it reads through blood pressure and some form of emitted waves. In the demonstration, they still used a keyboard and mouse to move around, while concentrating on blocks allowed them to pick them up and throw them with their mind. This is all pretty cool, but I'd way rather VR FPS.
Its a nice idea but i don't think it'll work well .. I think it'll turn out like the virtual boy .. Gives people headaches which causes people not to play then they stop making and selling ..
