It seems like there is always something messing up with my xbl connection. First it was my IP address, then it was my NAT, and now its my MTU... Is this just me or does it happen to you guys too?

A few days ago my downstairs computer crashed, taking my entire network down with it. Eventually we got it fixed and now everything works fine... except my xbox live connection. Every now and then it works, but the connection is terrible and usually ends up lagging me out of most games. When I tried testing it, it told me that my MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) wasn't high enough for live to work. We still use the same router so I have no idea why this is happening.

For starters I have the same problem.

I have looked the error code up online using the Microsoft Error reporting. They have a set of known errors, well I have one.

I use two routers, types do not matter but if you think they do one is a Netgear wireless(This is into ISP MOdem), then a Wireless D-Link G. Which worked fine before Christmas. Now MTU is negotiated between routers. However according to Microsoft you can set the MTU.

Boy are they wrong, anyway xbox live only uses two ports to connect. Since this issue I have changed the settings form the two ports to all ports open.
Yet I will still get the same error.

    W:0000 - 000B
    X: 0000 - F001
    Y: 0000 - 0000
    Z: 0000 - 0000

This I get for both the MTU(failed) or ICMP(failed), this has nothing to do with NAT, NAT(This only allows me to play with certain people) does not come into play until after connection to XBL.

I am all wired nothing wireless, and I can ping my ISP just fine from my upper network. Which is on the same LAN as the XBOX. As you can see that makes no since. If my computer can go out just fine so should my Xbox.

As you can tell I do know what I am talking about and I have used all the support/Troubleshooting from Xbox.com to Microsoft.com.

    Other things I have tried.

    Updated all firmware(Which was already)
    Configuring Firewall
    Shutting down Firewall
    Configuring router 2
Connect straight from Router 1 to Xbox
(So you can see it stops from Router1 so Router2 is not the issue)

Traced/Watched packets from Xbox to Router1 and packets go through just fine with no problem occurring, however the Xbox generates the MTU or ICMP errors. Both spitting out the above error code.
I have direct connected into the ISP modem and it works fine.

However I need to have my network up 35% of the time for work.

This post was meant to be viewed by people who understand networking to try and help me out. Please do not redirect me to other sites I have read them all. No layer 1 issues.

So when I go online I need to be directly connected through my modem.

Well you seem to be having the same problem I had...I had to wait two days and eventually my internet fixed itself. I would advise calling your ISP and have someone fix it, but that is if you are as bad with internet stuff as I am

I had the same problem and it fixed itself in a day as well. Also the MTU is controlled by your router or modem it stands for something like "Maximun Transfer Unit". It determines the maximum size packets can be sent before they need to be broken down into smaller packets. You want yours set to 1400 for xbox live to work. Go to your router control panel and try to change it if it is already at 1400 then you just need to wait for it to fix itself normally in a day or so.

Just got done rebooted router and still nothing. I don't see why my packet fragmentation needs to be set to 1400 if the router already negotiate between each other what size is needed.

Xbox live can't handle packet sizes larger then 1475 because it cause lag.

ah hah........ when i joined live in september 07' i had this problem, go to ur computer, switch it off completely.
u should have a broadband box so disconnect this completely.
switch ur computer back on and test ur connection, it shouldn't work.
now wire the broadband box back up and check that ur modem wires are in place very tightly.
restart the computer and if u have 'windows vista/Xp' only sign in one account.... sign in on xbox.com.
then go to ur xbox and switch it on, connect to xbox live manually! not automatically.
restart ur console and all should be in working order, i find that this works well for my homes wireless network.
if this doesn't work then i think u should start to consider a new internet provider. anyways, i hope this helps m8 as this is what i do if my connection goes on me. cheers m8!
