I have no problem with chasing away members that don't want to actually give their thoughts and criticism on the maps that are posted. The more people that can be weeded out who don't want to take an active part in the community, the better of a site this will be. You don't have to write a book on what you did and didn't like, but at least give some comments to let the guy know that you actually looked at his map. It may suck, it may be great; bottom line is that people spend stupid amounts of time putting their maps together and should be getting a more of an articulate response from the folks here on how they can improve as map and game creators.
I fully agree with you, but what i dont like is that titmar (Who i responded to) *seems* (dont get mad at me, this is just the way i interpreted your words) to be saying that we need to spend all this time writing out responses and testing the maps, but what i am saying is that sometimes we dont want to DL every map. I DL very few maps here. mainly because i like to have room for all my own (as i forge constantly). I mean, i like to post what i think from the screenshots and the thread, but 99% of the time, i just dont have time to go about testing every map i post about.
I hear you. I'm not sure if Titmar's comments were directed squarely at you, just an overall observation that for the most part seems to be the case. I know I've looked at the forum boards from time to time and seen someone post in every thread on the page and it's usually been a two-word comment like "looks cool", "sweet, DL", or something equally non-helpful. Those are the kind of people we could stand to weed out.
I have had a great deal of ideas, and have made a ton of maps. So far, two have come out very successful. But that is what I love about forging, it's all about trial and error, but when you hit the jackpot, it makes things so much better. I always, always, always like to think outside the box when it comes to making maps. I feel this provides me with the greatest chance for a big success. I've got a map in the works right now, that is looking to be interesting. My only hope now is that it's a success and not a phail.
I can come up with some pretty epic ideas, however, when trying to put them together... yeah, they don't really work out alot of the time. I'm still figuring a few out atm, so hopefully they'll turn into some kind of epic win, but we'll see.
Making things work is always tough. If you are ever in a tough spot, send me a FR or PM. Im always happy to help!
Earlier today I went through to delete all my crap screenshots, videos, map variants, and gametypes. It took me a freaking half hour, that's how much i uber fail.
lol. I never save any of my crap. If I finished the map and it turned out bad I delete it right away. BTW tmrw I get my XBL back!
Im not saying you have to write a novel. My post was not directed at you. And many times i have thought a map looked cool and downloaded it and it played like complete ****, looks are not everything. I feel that squidhands backed me up pretty good so i have nothing left to say. Its funny how few people on this site "get" me.
Ok, i do see where you are coming from. I just feel that sometimes, SOMETIMES, you dont need to write a novel/DL a map to understand you do/dont want to play it. I mean, some maps you just want to try, and others you just wanna say what you think, but really, IMO, either way is fine. If FH had "etiquette" like that, itd just get in the way. One liners get annoying, but SOMETIMES thats all you need. Ok, so, that wouldve helped. Wish you had said that...
