Okay, so this is something I've noticed in Halo quite a bit. In the opening FMV for Halo 3, Spartan 117, "John" was shown jumping from the Forerunner Keyship at extremely high altitudes down to planet earth, burning up and living through it with little more than a locked gel layer and a few moments of unconsciousness to show for it. Now we get to the rest of the campaign and gameplay. I remember several instances in the gameplay, where blissfully unaware I would jump off a cliff (okay, so I did it intentionally out of boredom), only to find several seconds later the game accusing me of falling to death.

Am I the only one who notices the inconsistencies here? John-117, who fell from the upper layers of the atmosphere at supersonic speeds and survived a collision with the earth can fall to death from a few hundred to a few thousand feet? I somehow am not believing this notion, especially considering the fall he survived at the beginning of the game.

A friend of mine pointed out in discussion that most of the time, he dies because he lands in water, as though his suit can't stand that kind of environment. Mind you, the Mjolnir Mark VI armor was called an environment suit by Guilty Spark, and this was demonstrated in the sequence in Halo 2 where you're running around on the outside of the Earth Defense Platform. If it can enable Master Chief to survive and breathe in space, then it certainly can help him continue to live underwater. His suit can handle the thousands of degrees that are involved in falling through orbit, trudge through mud and swamp, and adequately stave off flood spores. I doubt that a little bit of water would do it in.

    Any thoughts?

lol yeah you make a good point as to why this whole falling to your death thing is a bit sketchy. but if this wasn't in place you could just roamed wherever you pleased. imagine playing multiplayer where you lived after falling off of guardian or blackout? a little ridiculous i think. it's just to keep you limited in where you can travel. besides, everybody knows that chief had 4x overshields on when he fell from the keyship.

You see that piece of burning metal next to his body on the start of the campaign? the metallic door type thing? he used that to sorta protect him from the atmosphere layers burning him up, maybe even to semi glide down, kinda protect him from the impact.

very nice thought, but does it really matter? it makes the game more better and not glitchy. if you could just jump off a cliff on standoff or campaign then it would be glitchy and boring.

He obviously surfed down on that piece of metal lying near the crash site. And maybe the fall damaged his suit so he couldn't fall that far ever again.

Good point about falling to death. Chiefs armor is able to float due to some jell type stuff. It will survive in water.

Chief in the story wont float, thats just halo 3's "corpse's" trait within the engine. It looks funnier if the dead guy slowly floats downriver.
    Also
A He didnt jump from space into the atmosphere,he left the ship well after re-entry.Also it would appear he was in some form of pod or a section of the ship

B Death barriers are put in to keep us wihtin the map Upid :p

C Yes they can fall that far and live, read first strike :)

I think he just got damaged by falling because one of the Marines sayes that the armor is still kinda locked up, so that may be why
    Doubt it tho.

    I know how!

It's a ****ing game. Of course it's not going to follow the basic principles of physics. Now stop whining about it.

    Ya-yea.
