Map Link: The Box Hive Overview: Welcome to the Box Hive. This is a claustrophobic arena with several levels and plenty of close range weapons: perfect for king of the hill, oddball, juggernaut, and slayer matches with 2-6 players. Players spawn in a small box and must make their way (via portal) to the top of the map. From here on out, it's a matter of knowing your way around the arena and getting below, above, or behind your enemies. The screenshots should explain. So, if you like small, intense matches and can handle the third dimension, give the Box Hive a DL. Please leave any comments, criticisms, and other such responses here. Thanks, guys. Screenshots: Top View Here's a view from the top of the map. After spawning, teleporters take players into the shielded boxes you see. There's a floating regenerator in the middle of the top level. Watch out, though, they are easily scattered by the fusion coils behind them. This is also where the return objective points spawn in objective games. Middle Level Here's the middle level... probably the safest place to be. There are 2 brute shots and 2 maulers in the corners. Bottom Level This is the bottom level. The overshield spawns here. The regenerator DOES NOT. Each passage leads to an elevator. 2 of those lead to the top level. 2 lead to the middle level. Spawn Box Here's the spawn box. There are 16 total, each set of 2 shares a teleporter, and each teleporter leads (randomly) to a start-box on top of the map. 3rd Dimensional Assault If you can memorize the jumps/falls/lifts that get you to your opponents, you'll have no problem overwhelming them. Master the 3D Master that 3rd dimension and you'll be the king of the box hive. Please update the map link, you linked to the edit post page. I got confused and disappointed when I got denied access! The correct link is here. Disappointed because, WOW, queued for download. The top level looks great. The only thing I don't like from screenshots are the shield doors, but that's my opinion from having not played this map and from having played other maps with short range weapons and shield doors. Other than that, the concept and execution looks amazing and I can't wait to check it out.
Link fixed. I also wanted to download it but couldn't. Thanks Gimp, for tracking down that file for us.
Thanks for fixing that link, guys. I was trying to post in between data analysis at pseudo-work. Hope you enjoy the map. And as far as the shield doors go, people generally stay away from them (if there's more than 2 people playing). I know what you're talking about, though.
pretty nice... i would download but its kinda the same as the desolation remake that i already have... though i give you props on the interlocking objects... you did em well... :squirrel_rocking:
great job I'm DLing, but you might want to think about the power bomb that overshields on top of a Regen will create that seems like almost a minute of invicibility... but fresh idea anyway!
The regenerator and overshield aren't in the same place in the version you guys can DL. The regen is floating above the top floor. So the only time you should get a person with both at the same time is right at the beginning, which makes for an interesting little sprint. There's plenty of assassination chances on this map, anyway.
I don't think the regen recharges overshields, could be wrong though. Rick, I flew through this map in Forge and it looks awesome! Vertical carnage. I did notice that one of the mancannons only took me up one level, not two. It seemed to work if I was holding one direction or another, but if I let go of my movement stick I hit a ledge and got knocked into the second level. No biggie. One suggestion I would make would be to move the plasma grenades on the top level to inside the shield doors. That way, if you teleport up there and there's a guy with a shotgun camping the other side you at least have a way to kill him if he charges you. My other concern is spawning. Did you notice any issues when you were testing? I know that the game sometimes spawns people in weird areas if there are no acceptable spawns available. Seeing that all the respawns are in that one spot on the map, I'm worried that it might happen from time to time. Has it? Overall, this looks like a very fun, intense map. I can't wait to get 2-3 guys together to play it.
it doesn't and when I said invincibility it was merely a hyperbole, its nice to know that they don't spawn in the same place but Furious: it's just the thing that some player would find a way to manipulate, as soon as the overshields run out you can drop a regen which stays around for about half a minute, give or take and the overshields take about 1/2 minute to fade, uninterrupted of course, and if some one really wanted to they could just backpack the power up for later use. But these problems are mostly fixed with the two objects in different places, you just might want to take new screenshots Cosmic Rick.
Good suggestion on the plasma placements. And thanks for noticing the elevator flaw. I guess I always hold the direction I'm going to exit the lift down. I might be able to fix that up for a version 2 sometime in the future, but I'm busy working furiously on codename: PJ right now. The box hive was really just a little side project. Great for small matches, though, isn't it? EDIT: I haven't seen any problems with the spawns yet, but it might happen if you got a huge game together. Should still work fine, though.
Excellent interlocking and inventive mapdesign! I understand that you want the map to feel confined but it feels a little to cramped for me. Can't wait to see your next map though . Keep up the good work!
