I would really like to hear from the community about this. What in your opinion makes a great forged map? I'm brainstorming some ideas but I wanna know what you people look for in the maps you d/l. Interlocking is the obvious one but what else? Playability? Originality? Please explain to me why you look for what you answered in a map. It would help me so much.
Originality tops the cake. As it is hard to find nowadays. I look at original maps in awe. For example, Duck Hunt, Sapphire, etc. They are just all around great. Check them out for inspiration ;-)
Originality is all well and good, but gameplay should be your primary concern. Even if your map is original, no one will care about it if the gameplay sucks.
No one you say? You're obviously mistaken, considering my post. Gameplay is 2nd to Originality imo. This is an opinion based question though, just look at the title.
sorry Tex, but would you really enjoy an original map if the gameplay was the worst you've ever experienced?
What I am trying to get across is, make the map original enough to make gameplay epic. A perfect example of a map that does that is paragon.
a good example of this is Distortion. Map is original and great but imo gameplay lacks. Thnx so far, I would like to hear from others though as well. When I make a map I try my best to keep originality and playability on equal grounds.
I like maps that look cool, i.e the one with the train, but mostly i like maps that play differently every time you play it. Levels like Labyrinth i think is this way.
originality. Sure interlocking is good and it looks good. but if it wasn't something that you need to have a good map here, then i probably wouldn't do it. interlocking really doesn't do anything.
K, what do u guys think about adding extra aesthetics to maps? Is it worth the extra trouble to add something nobody might even notice?
I was simply pointing out that Originality is key in modern forging. You were trying to argue that point. I see now that you are favoring both sides, so I don't think that this debate is needed. You say they both are necessary. I agree. Though, my original point was that if you want a great map, make it original. Gameplay comes second. Even though it comes second, it is still an important factor, I didn't say previously that it wasn't important, I just said that it comes second. EDIT: Sorry Ryu, Yes, absolutely, aesthetics are another great factor in map-making, as with all three factors implemented, you will get your self risen to the top sooner then later.
Definitely originality like other people have said. It depends if you are making a competitive map, etc. If a competitive, make sure there are enough jumps, and locations to reach another destination. If a mini game, make sure its original and well put together so no one can glitch through it, etc.
