On another site I found this video. So I seriously suggest watching it and then reading my opinion, becuase im not explaining whats going on in my post. There is another video that I linked later on in the post, watch that one when you come to it. Also Youtube is owned by Google, so I may switch off on wich name I use. Now, I can see why Viacom would want to rid all of the illegall copyrighted material from youtube, or other sources. But realistcly, how would they do that? Now this guy says that they're going to look through every single bit of data. He also says that Viacom shouldnt be going after us, but after youtube. Im hoping I gathered this correctly from the video. This is where I disagree with the him: How is viacom going to get the resources to look through every single piece of data. I mean, how many videos do you look at on youtube? Im guessing a lot. So I think that the person coducting the video may be wrong Same goes for Youtube. People cant expect Youtube to be able to remove every single piece of content, they just dont have the manpower. Im changing the sub-topic, and will come back to that (above list) later. So why would I care? Well, good question. And the answer is.... Google was forced to give Viacom ALL of the user information. This includes: Usernames IP Address Any video you've ever watched Well now Viacom has the right to remove any copyrighted material thats been illegally uploaded or whatever. But this is just going to far. So does this count as a violation of our rights?Moving back to the 1 and 2 list. Contradicting Point Number 1 Well I thought earlier on while watching this that Viacom was just threatening and was going to try and look through everything, but would end up failing. But then I watched this and it said that Viacom was in fact "in the middle of a lawsuit" with Google (owners of Youtube). And in that lawsuit Viacom was given a full list of all user information on Youtube (stated above). So then I thought "Maybe they're getting seriouse about this..." Contradicting Point Number 2 Well I have noticed videos that has been removed due to "terms of use violation". And they were removed 15 minutes after they were uploaded. And it other people watching it cant remove it, so is it reported, or do they actually watch ever single video? Now how many people would actually go about reporting things that violate the terms of use (ToU)? Not many. So that brings us to this: Does Youtube really watch everysingle video thats uploaded? Now to me that doesnt seem very farfetched. But what I dont know, is how many videos are uploaded a minute. So I dont know if Youtube can actually view ever video, or if there are just too many. So this section of the... puzzle... is un-answered. What now? So whats going to happen? Well, if Viacom finds someone that has violated the copyright, are they going to sue them? And what do they view as violating a copyright? Uploading copyrighted things? Or also watching copyrighted things? How many of you have violated at least one copyright law? Probably every one. And that may not have actually been your fault. Like the guy said, you dont know that your going to see when you click a link. So what, is Viacom going to make a list of everyone they're going to sue, and are they going to sue people because they uploaded something, or because they accidentally watched a copyrighted video whos owner was not the one providing the video. Boycotts? The guy conducting the first video wants us to boycott Viacom goods, but not everyone knows how severe that would be. Heres a list of all the things Viacom owns: Paramount Dreamworks CMT Rhapsody MTV Comedy Central Spike Bet Networks And how many of who like to watch things from Paramount, or fom Dreamworks. I know my parents love CSI on Spike (im not sure what other channels CSI is on). But boycotting all of these might not only affect Viacom, but whats going to happen to all of those companys? How much money will they loose? Will we drive a couple of them out of business? "Oh no! I wanted to teach Viacom a lesson, but I accidentally drove my favorite TV channel out of business!" And it may not get that extreme, but you never know. And besides, its not there fault that Viacom is being... not cool. Wrapping it all up... So my point is: Does Viacom really have the resources to do this? Whats going to happen to us? If we boycott will we loose some of our favorite companys? Is it really Youtubes fault, and can they even prevent it? So go my minions, and debate to your hearts content.
If youtube restrictions become too great, people will just find another video uploading site to share them on. They'll force themselves out of competition. I'm asuming they have Bots that search for copyright material. I'm betting that if you uploaded a copyrighted video, but labeled it something like "Billy's 2nd Birthday" it wouldn't be removed.
that's pretty crazy. im sure viacom does, or will have the resources to look through every video. it would take a very long time.... but it's possible.
That's just plain impossible , you'd have to employ thousands of people to get through all the videos at a decent rate and even if they did Viacom would go bust because people wouldnt just go and watch these videos for free for long periods of time. Thats means that viacom would probably fail at this task due to the sheer amount of time taken and the money drain due to thousands of jobs.
Exactly what he said in the video. It is not our fault if we watch a video without the legal qualifications, but youtube's fault for not filtering them. Screw viacom. I say just let the boycott begin
May i refer u to two anti viacom vid srry dont know how to embbed them YouTube - VIACOM VS YOU = BOYCOTT-therealweeklynews http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGfAu_HRz6g -sxephil
Thats something I wanted to say but I forgot too. Nice post. But how would Youtube filter them, like I and Bushmen said, how would they get enough resources?
I'm just pissed that they would even do this to their own customers. I have a feeling all of this power is going to ruin them and some other corporation will take their place
Me too, but then we'll most likely loose all of the things that Viacom owns, wich would not be good at all.
I was thinking that, but I'm sure another corporation is powerful and supported enough to take its place. And this change will just make them more powerful. In all, any company would jump at the chance to rule that empire
It would be really hard for people to boycott MTV,Comdey Central, Spike TV, and like other channel's. I really can't believe Viacom is doing this, I mean their are other site's than youtube that actually show movie's and TV channel's. Example's like Hulu.com that site has TV and Movie's!
A filter system to find copy right content would be all to easy for Viacom. Google does own the website after all.... Don't boycott the TV stations, boycott Youtube. Use other video uploading sites. Its as easy as that.
