Hey everyone, just joined here today, seems like a pretty cool site. Anyway, I was wondering how you guys come up with names for the maps you make. I'm way to indecisive to choose names, and at the moment all my maps are called new, new 1, etc... So if anyone out there can give me tips on how to decide on a name it would be greatly appreciated -Thanks
I just think about how the game plays and name it after that. Or if there's a special feature I'd name it after that. Or you could just come up with something catchy.
http://thesaurus.reference.com/ I usualy use that. For example I make a map with lots of towers? Search tall and i get loads of names.
^^ agreed. Also, if you cant find anything that has a good ring to it in the thesaurus, try using a translator. Think of a cool word, and then see what the word is in Latin. Almost all latin words sound really cool.
what does the map resemble what were the influences, etc if it's a remake of something, break up the word, and find synonyms for each word that sound good Name it something stupid name it for the gametype name it after something or somewhere it's all up to you
I name the map after I get the feel for what it is like "The Estate" was going to be like a manor/mansion deal so we went to look for synonyms and got its current name. "Training Ground" actually feels like a training area. And "The Labyrinth" was what we were trying to create... a labyrinth.
As everyone has said, descriptions of a map or feature are the easiest way to name things. I like doing that, but by loose associations. I have two open double-boxes adjacent to each other and standing on end, so I think it looks kind of like... ...a chimney... So I call it... Mary Poppins. Double points for creativity and WTF-factor by those who have never played it before!
I usually name it off of what it reminds me of when I look at it. Like the other day I made a map, and when I started it I had the general idea of forming a pyramid like structure, but a quarter of the way through it ended up being more like a mountain than a pyramid, so I named it "Everest." (I'm going to test it soon then post it.) Another map I made has 4 bases in each corner of the big room of Foundry so I named it "4 Square." I think the best way to name a map is to get a good overview of the map from whichever angle you think is best and then name it the first thing that comes to your mind.
Obviously everyone has their own process, however mine might be a bit more complex. Here are the steps in which I follow. 1.) Pick a word or title that interests you such as Shadows or something of that matter 2.) Get the definition of that word and if it does not fit the design or concept of your map, choose another. 3.) Since your word such as one like Shadows may seem a bit plain and ordinary, use a thesaurus to find words that sound a bit more catchy 5.) Some of the ones that come off of the word shadows include silhouette, twilight, gloom, murkiness. Now use the one that best fits your map. That is how my map titles usually come about being how they are. And of course if your not happy with the results, repeat the process. Some of the results that may come from the example word shadows I used may include: Shadowsphere The Twilight Silhouette Hope this helped.
Well if I am having a bad day naming (basically everyday :squirrel_nono: ) I usally think of song names that basically describe the map (same if I am trying to name a game type).
Same. Generally, i name it after the feature, or i start a map with a theme in mind, like an assault map i might name infiltration or something like that. I named a zombie map infestation on standoff. Not unique, but it makes sense and its hard to forget because it makes sense.
