This is my first debate thread besides debates about the debate forums...As I'm trying to come up with new topics, that are very debatable, and not...imho...null... Smoke Free USA There has been wide spread concern about second hand smoking in bars & restaurants... It's caused people, who don't smoke, to get cancer, and those who are in bars & restaurants for extended periods of time, for example, bartenders, are at a much greater likelihood. High Exposure Though, the biggest concern about this, is that people will now have to drive longer distances while intoxicated to get their cigarette before they get home. More DUI's due to smoking while driving. I personally, am a smoker, and I know that by eliminating smoking in restaurants & bars, I don't go as often as I used to (only 19, so I don't go to bars, but I used to love going to a restaurant, eating my meal, then enjoying a fine cig afterwords...) Though, apparently, it has caused increased revenue for the restaurants and bars, I personally don't find how, but here's a source saying otherwise: Sure, slap me in the face Anyway, this is a debate, so I can't back one side without providing the other... Discuss...
This is gonna be a rough one tex... most of the kids on this forum are under the legal smoking age and are probably against smoking. I can already imagine the flood of one sentence long replies. Personally, yes i am a smoker. The way i feel about it is: In restaurants, i completely understand the ban. Although i normally like to enjoy a cigarette after i have finished my meal... I do realize that smoking irritates the other non-smoking patrons of the restaurant and i'm not bothered by going outside, or waiting to have one. However, smoking being banned in bars... it ****ing sucks. A lot. Part of the atmosphere of going out for a night at the bars is the smoky air, and the stench of alcohol. Most drinkers smoke. I dunno... I dont have much else to say on the subject. It's annoying, but it's understandable at the same time. I read somewhere that a bar can get around the ban by having a cigar machine in the bar, which technically makes them a smoke shop, and thus legal to smoke in. Not sure on the validity of that though.
Who cares if you smoke, as long as it's away form people who don't want to inhaul the smoke. Bars on the other hand, I can how that’s a problem, because were there’s a bar there’s a smoker. Besides, most people who care strongly against smoking are usually not the type of people to go to bars. Restaurants: smoking ban Bars: not sure
Ahhh the good old smoking ban. I enjoy it when I don't have to see the clouds of smoke and the smell of the cigs flowing past my face. Obviously I'm a non-smoker and I must admit that it's good that smoking has been banned in restaurants. I can understand some bars being baned, that is if they're more of a restaurant than a bar. I agree with people that if you want to smoke, go ahead, as long at it's not near me. If it's near me I'll cough and hack and once I even spat up blood once. My mother used to be a smoker too, until my parents got a divorce and she decided to quit cold turkey. Well, almost, she chewed gum (regular gum) whenever she had the craving. I just have cigarettes, they're disgusting, make you look unhealthy, and it's a friggen portable cancer stick, nothings worse than all those combined. But like I said earlier, I don't care if you smoke, just don't do it around children or people who don't like to smoke.
banning it altogether, is a violation of peoples rights. however, ill tell you, that i do support the ban from indoor restaurants and bars. i am allergic to ciggarette smoke [not fatally] and it cause me to be severly itchy, harder to breath and it makes me feel sick. Theres plenty of outside for you to smoke in, and that way, i think its fair. theres nothing worse than eating while someones smoking. i dont hate on smokers, they do what they want, but i dont wanna have to breath it 24/7 just cause they dont "feel like going outside". im a musician. my band plays many bars and clubs. please see my above post. theres ALWAYS a designated area for them, its not as if they arent allowed at all.
