What do people think about euthanasia or mercy-killing?

I personally support euthanasia given that the person being euthasized has given proper consent and is in a state fit enough to give consent

I also believe that if someone is in an irreversible coma, whoever has medical right of attorney should be able to turn off the life support machines.

I'll post more when people give their opinions.

I think it should be up to the family of the person who is in the coma or in a vegetated state.

If they want to see them go it's up to them and nobody else.

I beleive that it should be up to whomever the person designates to have that unfortuneate job.
I'd hate to have that kind of decision.
I do believe in Euthanasia in certain circumstances.

If it were legalized at all, it would need to be spelled out in a living will.

I support it, as long as the person makes the decision while they are mentally competent. Let them die with dignity.

I also find it incredibly hypocritical for people to put an old sick dog to sleep but to not support euthanasia.

Well dogs cant really voice their opinions and especially at that age.
But I hear what you're saying, one of the hardest things to witness is having you're pet put to sleep.

But we do it to ease the suffering of the animal. Why would we not ease the suffering of a loved one? True, the dog cannot voice its opinions or wishes. But people can. And if an elderly relative says, "I'm in pain. I'm ready to die. Please help me" then you can bet your ass that I'm going to ease their suffering.

    Knife wound to the head?

Euthanasia should only be used on people clear of mind and terminally ill. In the case of mercy-killings the parents should have supreme authority. I would hate for my daughter to go into a comma and her husband of 1 year say, "pull the plug!"

I think we share the same views. I would do the same in that situation. I would enjoy it, I'm not sure how I'd feel doing it but to let someone suffer can be just as bad.
You want to hold on, we reassure ourselves that "they'll be okay" when in reality, they are clearly suffering.

If I ever am vegetative or in a coma. I expect my best friend to shoot me. Not pull the plug. Shoot me. Thats how I'm going out.

I support it for animals greatly, as long as the owners give thier concent and the dog is in an irreversible state of disrepair. Sadly, one of my dachshunds had to experience euthanization last january. It is painful, but better than knowing that it is suffering.

    Agreed 100%

Mercy killing? I'm all for it. I don't believe that people with terminal illnesses are mentally ready to make that decision 100% of the time, but someone who loves them would definitely be able to tell.
Why, I ask, though, do we euthanize dogs with treatable conditions? They may be in a lot of pain during treatment, but afterwords they could be pain free...

It doesnt matter wether it is an animal or not. We are living, they are living, and nothing deserves to live in that much pain (unless they are people who have commited crimes like murder or rape. They can rot in hell).

If they give their consent in a living will and their parents/closest guardian gives consent, it should be allowed.
