Large Hadron Collider

    As some of you may know or not know, there's this giant scientific instrument called the Large Hadron Collider. The device was designed to accelerate particles to find the Higgs boson, or God particle. The God particle will explain how massless forms can still create mass in matter. Now this may sound like a great idea, but there is a problem. A huge flaw. The Hadron Collider could create a black hole on earth, which of course could be completely devastating. And now I ask you, is science and conquering particles important enought to destroy the earth?

    There's also a video if you want to actually learn more about it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fJ6PMfnz2E

    I think I saw this on the news....
    Pretty weird...thing is:
    I don't know whether to worry about it or not, because if they're doing it, it can't be that bad. But then again, why would you be warning me about it if it isn't?!

    PS: You can link the vid here by putting the URL between{media} {/media}
    Replace the {} with []

    wow, this was quite insightful...I think this should go in debate forum...because this should be being taken seriously...I think if I don't see this in debate forum by tomorrow I'm going to put it in there...will post opinions on it in there.

    edit...just realized, it was switched on in 2007

    what happened?

    They postponed it. It's going to happen in 4 weeks I think. And I wasn't sure this was debate material, but I guess it has potential

    Actually, the only black holes they could create would be extremely small (like the size of a particle or atom or something) and would exist for only a fraction of a second. It won't be devastating at all.

    But it has great potential to give physicists a lot of information. It's supposed to answer a lot of questions. I can't wait. I'm a total science geek.

    Sometime soon. This year if they don't keep delaying it. Why do scientists make everything so dramatic?

    They said that there were multiple likelihoods of what will happen, no one really knows what is going to happen, like there could be a black hole (as you said) for a fraction of a second and would be extremely small, which all on its own, could be varied, that "fraction of a second" could be an eternity, and that "extremely small" could be the size of our solar system...we don't know.

    The one thing that scares me the most, is extra-planar travel, which could occur in this experiment, we could see beings that are far beyond our comprehension, causing insanity, or simply throwing us into that dimension, and just good-ol'-fashion being royally screwed.

    These are a few examples rey =/
