I'm just warming the topic up here... I won't weigh in until I hear some intelligent points made. Not that I'm waiting to see which way the wind's blowing.... I know what I think. So what do you think about the death penalty, Forge Hub? It is an issue in the United States. If you live in a country that has abolished the death penalty (IE almost every other country), please weigh in. I know you will anyway.
I agree. I'm not up on the news as its the summer, but how is the case for putting child rapists up for the death penalty? I hope it passes. The only thing that they need to eliminate (besides the criminals...see what I did there?) is the appeals. People can appeal over and over and over, causing millions of tax dollars to be waisted on criminals. Limit it to two or three. edit: to tear a page out of titmar's book, predicide take off your sig. yeah, hamurabi was a BAMF. But seriously, I think the legal system and punishments in this country do nothing besides eat up tax dollars. I don't think I have a solution that wouldn't be considered harsh, but how else are we supposed to prevent crime? I don't even think the death penalty really does much to prevent murder. If someone's about to stab someone, they don't think twice.
I completely understand the eye for an eye theory, but I still suggest a second chance: give the person a chance to receive a new outlook on life, and if they decide to murder another a second time then place them in an environment where they can do no harm. I don't believe there should be any intentional killing in the world, unless used to save another.
The only downside I see to the Death Penalty system (it may not be a problem anymore, I don't know) is that sometimes the convicted suspect may be falsely accused of a rape or murder or etc crime. But I am in favor of the system, I strongly believe if someone has commited a hate crime (from murder to rape) then they should be in death row. I learned a fact from my english teacher one day. He told my class that in Germany, if you commit a rape crime, you will be neutured.
An eye for an eye, makes us all blind.-Ghandi Capitol punshment really doesnt help reduce the crimes. It only makes our nation look mor uncivil. But then again, killers do deserve to die. But let us just let them die of old age in a holding cell.
Why let them stay alive and again- eat up tax dollars. I'm too lazy to find the stat, but I think its somewhere in the $15,000-$20,000 for one prisoner.
The main reason why capital punishment needs to remain is that it provides a reason not to kill somebody. As a criminal, you'd encounter many situations where it could be beneficial to do so. If you'd be killed if you did, you'll less likely to kill someone, since it doesn't sound like such a good choice. If your robbing a store, you could shoot the people that work there to reduce your chances of being caught-but risk being killed. And if you don't kill them, you only go to jail. Without the death penalty, your better off killing them, which then obviously puts there life at risk.

Its really the only thing that actually threatens the criminals life and if he is in the right mind knows not to do something or he will be killed.

There have been many times when people have been put to death for a crime they didn't commit. Many years later when new evidence is unearthed or forensics is used it has been discovered that they were innocent, the person had already been killed. Imagine if your friend or brother was killed for a crime and you then found out they didn't actually commit the crime. However, after saying that I believe the death penalty may be appropriate for serious crimes and only with complete and total evidence saying the person is guilty. If the person doesn't confess or if there is some doubt, they shouldn't be killed just in case they are innocent. The death penalty should only be used for serious crimes like serial murderers or dictators. recently a couple of Australians were sentenced to death in Indonesia for drug trafficking. They should be punished but to sentence a couple of 18 year olds who didn't know better to death for a first offense is a complete and utter overreaction by the indonesians.
I'm from Texas. I want to buy land on the Texas/Mexico border just cause you can legally shoot anyone crossing the border illegally. How do you think I feel about capitol punishment?
