I disagree with this only because I love to shout from the top of the mountains about how much I love the art on my maps haha. My focus is art and I have every intention of being the best at it because it's what I do and enjoy best.

From the moment I decorate my map with ambient lighting, or splash textures and grit on geometry, or place sounds that echo across the scene, environment design to me is a magical - and wildly personal - endeavor. And I view them as scenes. The end game for me is to walk around the map and look through a viewport. It's that moment when I can admire the authenticity of the light as it dances around walls; or when I can imagine how materials might feel, or what temperature the environment might be; or when I can lose my eyes along gentle spiral curves that draw them to areas of interest; or when I can immerse myself in the aural experience. My maps are moments frozen in time meant to stimulate all of your senses. When you go on one of my maps, I want you to feel like you're entering a chamber in my heart, or gazing through a piece of my soul, and experiencing how I felt at the time I made it.

And this is a technique I've only recently began to solidify. I don't like to share unfinished work because there are so many quality checks that need to be in place before the art gets to where it needs to be. But rest assured that if I ever post another map, it'll have the best art of any Halo map. I say that as a challenge to myself, because I believe I am 100% capable of achieving that (as far as Forge allows) and I don't ever shoot for anything less.

Haha :) Can't argue with that.

I feel the same way about environmental design. Every corner of a map has a soul in my eyes. I once told Box this and he laughed, but I mean it. If I don't look at everything from every angle, I can't be sure, if it really is something. Something I can appreciate for more than a few seconds, something that leaves an ongoing impression in my mind. This can go such far where a few in-game centimeters of a rock's angle matter.
Of course, with limitation comes realism as in how far we can develop and realize a certain technique or procedure.

This is why it's important to stay firmly on the ground while also flying freely in the sky.

I don't know how many people have heard of this "1 hour forge challenge," but it's a lot of fun. Salty and Box started doing this a while ago, and I just participated in one against box. You basically just pick an arbitrary time limit (like an hour or 45 minutes) build a playable map in that amount of time, and then play the maps. Not only is it just a lot of fun, but it's really good practice. If anyone wants to get on and participate, I really want to keep doing this.

This was my map from our excursion yesterday

The only way you'll see me do this is if I get off my ass and put invis barriers on my spiral staircase prefabs lol

Good points, some of which I was going to come to, others I just missed. It was a classic 3AM post on my part I should say! There are ups and downsides to everything for sure. As you mention, I was talking more about the cultural aspect, in that self sufficiency brings us in tune with our creative/productive nature. I certainly don't mean to propose communism, just a little more balance in life between production and consumption.

In the western world the emphasis lies heavily on consumption over production. When the majority of people are denied the right to produce things of their own, such as this case @SaltyKoala brings up of a harmless beneficial plant being made illegal to grow, their only choice is to take what is handed down to them. There's a bunch of cases you can find on the internet of people being harassed by the law in one way or another for trying to live more independently. That's concerning for our freedom.

I'm not sure if I have a point as much as I'm just venting some thoughts here. It's a pretty fascinating topic I'd say either way.

This is a really good way to let go of perfectionism and actually get stuff finished. Somehow we create some of our best stuff when we don't try to hard and just trust intuition. It's something I'm trying to get better at but that perfectionist curse is strong!
