Agreed. I can't think of a single encounter design decision in Destiny 2 that I thought was genuinely creative. The same goes for Destiny 1 for the most part, but it was much better than 2 in every raid I played. This is off topic, but I also think that the art in Destiny 1 was significantly better than it is now. When most people hear that opinion, they're really surprised, but I think there's an obvious lack of "soul" in Destiny 2 when you go back and refresh your memory. Christian and I went and tried to 2 man the Vault of Glass months ago, and even just from that area, I think he was convinced. Vex architecture had way more structure and imposing geometrical shapes, while Destiny 2's Vex could be compared to that map you and Demption worked on, which, no offense, looked like a reach map with a "vexy-cubism" skin applied. The whole of the dreadnaught and Crota's End was better than any Hive in Destiny 2 by miles, and actually felt scary. The Cabal actually seemed like a race of brutes who's only culture is that of war and power (which D2 completely ruined with the main storyline and raid), and the architecture reflected that. The fallen were around the same, but had better encounter design, like invading a docked ship and what not. This reminds me of something I've been trying to articulate in my head lately. I don't think I can find something artistically great unless there's an obvious design to whatever I'm looking at. I can look at that Destiny 2 map you posted and recognize the great colors, good lighting, great textures, a solid theme, and a dope skybox, but it's not special in an overall artistic sense, and I find that most people DO find Destiny 2 maps and zones amazing in that aspect in particular. It's weird, and a little bit annoying, but it's just the way I look at things now. It's not even about "emotion" or a strong theme, or lighting, or even atmosphere. It's about the design itself. If the design looks interesting AND it reflects the setting with a sort of visual storytelling and purpose, I'll find the map interesting to look at. Maybe I've spent so much time on Artstation and Pinterest that I've just become immune to pictures that aren't architecturally unique, but in any case, I feel like this is a good problem to have. There's almost nothing in existence that actually fulfills this sense of "geometrical purpose" that I've been made aware of, which has me excited to make something. The next thing you see from me will be such a retarded jump in Quality from any other map I've made that you'll wonder how it's even the same person. I went full soldat mode towards the end there but yeah anyways the new Drake album makes me want to be his other son
Well Destiny 1 at launch shipped with a lot of Halo-esque level design. They didn't know what they were doing so they just kind of built the game like they were building Halo. You see it reflected in the launch PvP maps and in the strikes and most of the Campaign spaces. When it comes to the strikes and PvP maps In Destiny 2, they're all flatter, way more run down and destroyed, and tailored to that lane based peek-shoot gameplay. And yea they have a "theme", but most of them are just lanes and lanes with skins over it. (But honestly it feels like most PvP maps are like this.) That "random geo with a theme" on it is what I started to move away from in my maps a year ago. I said I wanted all of my maps to be based around one or two unique rooms or structures, and then the environment would compliment that area. I've never been fond of the haphazard rundown level design where things are just placed wherever and given a thematic skin. I'm actually really tired of seeing destroyed ****, and it's probably why I like clean and whimsical Forge maps more. Sometimes the destroyed thing is appropriate, but all these broken down and noisy maps that lack structure are just unmemorable. Show me something intelligently built for a reason and I'm more likely to enjoy running around on it.

@Goat Fornite is a Psychological Thriller disguesd as an FPS. The game, and other BR games, are wildly popular beacause they play off such a raw and instincric evolutionary principle, Survial of the Fittest. They throw you into a digital food chain and dare you to survive. Those that do survive are rewarded by their own brains with a massive hormonal dump. An endorphin rush that a wide majority of players probably never receive in real life. I don't play the game, and have little interest in it, but I 100% understand why it's a good GAME. The reason is, it's a GAME. The wild success of the genre has nothing to do with any of the bells and whistles, it's the core of what BR games are at there most basic level thst makes them so attractive and addictive.
I agree, but the wild success of Fortnite in comparison to other BR games can only be accounted for within the details of the games sandbox.
I get why Battle Royale is popular. Fortnite just looks DOG and all the stupid animations and memes have ensured that I'll never play it unless I date a girl who asks me to.
Agree and disagree. There are some things in the "sandbox" that help attract and retain players. For example, the building aspect alone gives players another way to exert there prowess over other players in game. This did wonders for FN. On the non mechanical side of theings id aruge FN is more successful because it presents itself in a more lighthearted and animatef fashion which naturally is going to be more accepted by the younger gaming audience and more specifically and importantly, there parent's. The game casts a wider net then most BR games, just one of many reasons why it's Top Dog. Did I mention it's free? Yet another factor outside its sandbox that widly contributed to it's intial success. Put all that together and you have the recipe for a perfect storm.
Yeah the game in theory is more accessible because of the art style, but I constantly hear people talking about how goofy the game looks, calling it a game made for 6 year old kids. I seriously get that all the time, but I never hear people talking about PUBG like the art style is why they don't play the game. I'm of the mindset that if there's really any palpable difference in population solely based on art style, that more people say no to Fortnite because of the visuals than the other way around. None of this is verifiable, but it's just the way I see it. I don't think that there's anything more accessible than ultra-realism. As far as the free to play aspect goes, that helps. Again, we can't know how many people picked up the game because it's free. It's probably a decent number, but those people won't stick with the game if it's ****, and Fortnite broke the concurrent player record. I'm personally more concerned with population and viewership for that reason. There wouldn't be 130k people watching Ninja and 40k watching the next highest on a day to day basis if the game wasn't at least fun to watch, and therefore probably fun to play. The game has also proven to be good past that initial adrenaline rush of winning your first game or occasionally playing with friends. People, and not just try-hards, grind the **** out of the game. I mean everyday, normal people who really didn't even play video games that much before Fortnite. That's when you know you have something, and that will not happen if the game isn't quality to the core. Even if it's free. You could pay people to play Halo 5 and it would still be dead. You can't fake quality.
Bruce WIllis or Nicholas Cage. Which would you rather watch? Because Bruce Willis Die Hard was decent, but anything he's done in the last 15 years puts me to sleep. He's either annoying cocky or dull as a doorknob. At least Nick Cage is always memeworthy.
I come on this thread to relax but right now there is way too much Illuminati **** going down. I'm going elsewhere.
Suspect for what? Bungie's widespread use of esoteric occultic (often hermetic in orgin) symbolism and parallelism in both Halo and Destiny is a fact. There really isnt much to argue on this front... However the meaning of this symbolism, and why its used so often by Bungie, is a much more interesting topic. Whoever wrote the lore for the game obviously has a profound knowledge of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermeticism Why is that so shocking to people? It's really interesting stuff.
