I'm convinced Soldat was so devoted in his passion for Christ that he tried to recreate the Resurrection and is just now waking up thinking it's still April Fools
The only thing making me heated is you telling me I'm heated. If you think the color palette of Riptide is a good choice, so be it - I don't. In fact I've heard passing comments from several different people over the months saying what an eyesore it is to look at. The bigger crime (and what carries the bulk of the art style) is the aerial geometry of the map and it's composition. No, the rounded doorways in isolation don't matter. But coupled with every other over detailed corner of the map and it reaches the point where I feel like I'm being stabbed in the eye. Look at the pictures goat posted above. I feel like if I stare at one spot too long I'll risk going blind. It is literally just an amalgamation of stupidly detailed tech sci fi bits that make no sense. Nothing about this looks UNSC. Nothing about this tells me it's for some underwater lake station on a foreign planet. In fact, if you removed the water mark and posted it ambiguously on other game forums they probably wouldn't even be able to tell you it's from Halo. And these are the same assets that are present on every other UNSC map on the disc, so no wonder the art style is unfocused garbage. It's generic, but it's not even good generic. Hell every corner, every angle is rounded off as if it was made of playdoh. Seriously, everything is rounded. That's not human like, not even by Halos own future sci fi standards. And none of that comes to mention that none of the sightlines lead your eye into other focal points. None of the vistas bleed through a crack in the wall. The composition of every one of those shots are amateur, which is in huge part to the **** design in part. Then we can talk about the fact that the map, in whole, doesn't tell me what it is through the art. What is the back blue room supposed to be? What is the open gravity lift room supposed to serve in this base? I don't know, because the art sucks. And the colors are dog.
I like the visuals on Riptide and the size but it doesn't say Halo to me and I'm just not into the map. I like the concept of the art style they were building but I would like to see it on a better map with a proper, or it may be better to say a 'more traditional', Halo theme. I would't mind the rounded edges look as much if it were only one map, but I hate that it is the go to for anything UNSC.
I've consolidated your arguments to these points, correct me if i'm wrong • Too much visual noise If i remember correctly most of the paths (the first picture is a good example) are made distinct with grey metal, while the walls around the map pop with color. This is an example of good visual ques that you are overlooking. The saturated details quickly become a non-issue once players become comfortable with the layout, there is nothing wrong with a learning curve. Loading zone, a map packed with stupid amounts of detail, benifited from the same techniuqe. • unclear art direction "Nothing about this tells me it's for some underwater lake station on a foreign planet. " Well if you played Fathom, a map that comes with the game it's as simple as putting two and two together. And so what if every single segment doesn't explain what it's practical use is pertaining to the overarching theme? That would be amazing if it did, but this is a classic example of a nit-pick crituiqe. Usualy hinting that the critic in question has ulterior, more personal reasons for objecting to the map. • bad composition/ framing I will absolutely grant you this one, and i think you said it best why that is "The composition of every one of those shots are amateur, which is in huge part to the **** design in part" The point is that art doesn't have to be perfectly executed (in this instence we agree it hasn't been) in order to be objectively good, or even beautiful. For the sake of intellectual honesty you have to be able to give and take fairly and objectively. Any time 343 is mentioned on this forum and their associated works, they are denounced with hyperbolic unargued points. But if we are being fair there are a few redeaming qualities about some of the maps
You guys are actually retarded (except @Soldat Du Christ ) The color scheme and artstyle is so objectively good on riptide that Nerf created an entire product line directly inspired by it. I'm actually extremely impressed at how well the Nerf models did at capturing the essence of Riptides theme. From the rounded geometry to the soothing color palette, no detail is left unreflected in there work. Big hats off to the boys down at nerf, I actually feel like I'm playing on Riptide when I look at these!
Yes, of course, women need to be submissive to my authority, she needs to know how to cook and clean while I (the man) is out working. It's just an objective fact that Soldat really nailed
For those who want to implement more glitch-free doors onto their maps... maybe the first in a series of templates/prefabs. auto-door-template
