That's true for everything except Forge. I don't have limitations when I score or paint, but Forge puts my ideas in a box and there is a certain point where, if you have something, you have to settle - to decide if what you've made is close enough to what you wanted to follow through with it. I'm just not sure if I'm at that point yet.

The small covenant crates and podlegs and whatnot are truly some of the best for small assets. Hopefully one day we can make small scale items that don't require lots of wall and floorspace to hide and manipulate.

If there was anything I wanted overlays for more than anything it would be glass, what even is the point of a castle if you can't have nice weathered clear windows.

I like objects as it allows us to make assets really quickly and find cool creative designs though experimenting more easily than say creating 3d models, there are obvious downsides to this but I actually like the items system despite it's flaws.

As long as the next forge actually works properly (no BS glitches and bugs) and it is a good step forward from where we are now I think I will be happy with it, even if it isn't quite at a true level editor standard.

Just please make us or give us the option to no-clip and not die as a monitor at the very least. You know how dumb it sounds saying "I died in edit mode".

We should at least be able to expand or subtract the length, width, and height of objects, and even cut holes in the pieces

I mean the game is dead so it really doesn't matter either way. I just wanted to see if I had any cool ideas left because set dressing is still enjoyable. So I might just bite the bullet and polish what I have.

There are two kinds of people: those who make the impossible possible, and those who make excuses.

And those people have offspring: a realist and an idealist. Today, I am the former.

I don't want forge to become a full on map creator personally. Forge has always been a limited map editor, and it has a certain charm that comes with it. I feel that bringing forge closer to an actual map creator would be too much. Of course there's MUCH to improve on, as everyone knows, but I don't really want forge to move towards being a more professional creator, that's what the actual software is for. Unpopular opinion, I know, but that's just me. (It's not like I'd hate it if forge went that direction either, just prefer if it didn't).

I mean it makes sense in a way. Many of us Forge for the following reasons:

    1. It's in Halo (whatever Halo is these days)
    2. It's collaborative in real-time and you can play and share your creation instantly
    3. It's competitive
    4. It's accessible

The competitiveness of Forge stems from its limitations. When someone discovers a new way to use objects, it might inspire someone to make a map, which might lead to another map, which might spawnanother nerdy design. It's that domino effect that keeps the community innovating, and I'd say that's a uniquely charming quality of Forge that we'd lose if we could just drag and drop whatever we wanted.

Is "Forge skill" worth preserving though? At the end of the day, who really wants to use pipes for candles? Forge is based around manipulating objects that don't need to be modeled, and you're using lighting that doesn't need to be rendered, and you don't need to animate your own effects or record your own sounds. We can only use what is given to us. Going a step further and introducing an asset library, along with the ability to create or share our own assets (or maybe access what's already online) would only help.

But then look how long it took the prefab system to arrive, and even that is still primitive (no pun intended). The amount of resources that would need to be poured into Forge to bring it to that point would be better served just making it a dedicated standalone editor altogether, and then who is the target audience? Because if you maintain that accessibility for the "noobs" who pick up Halo and Forge casually, you're holding back its potential. And if you go all in, you're narrowing the userbase even further. Even though I think Forge is still accessible, there are plenty of people who used to Forge that now find it too difficult, or see a widening gap that will only continue to widen with the more tools available to us.

I don't think Forge should be held back for the sake of "charm" or people who use it casually, but maybe the developers think it is a better use of their resources to keep Forge where its at. We were supposed to get weather effects as far back as Reach, so why has it taken so long? Either way, I hope we don't have to use splashes for waterfalls next year.

That's because you wait for everyone else to make cool things and prefab them.

I've had a bad habit of doing too much of everything, and lighting was one of those areas I was trying to scale back so I'm glad you said something.

I'll run through it again tonight!

Also, thanks everyone for liking my short video, its what keeps me from giving up learning the immense knowledge base of level design!

I remember back in the Reach days, when previews of forge came out, people noticed it's gametype was "Basic Editing" this led people to believe there was two different editing suites. One would be an improved version of H3's and one would be for more advanced editing such as terrain sculpting and object creation. This led to a lot of hype but was everyone's excitement was dashed when Bungie said "Basic Editing" was the only forge mode in the game.

I've always thought this was the best way for 343 to approach forge in H6 and beyond.

This would allow the mode to stay simple and accessible for casual forgers that just want to make map changes and silly basic minigames like H3/Reach had. But an advanced mode could bring forge and its community to the next level.

Imagine terrain sculpting, global lighting and skybox options, object creation, a **** ton of textures and object libraries. I want every asset of not only H6's campaign/multiplayer but of H4 and 5 as well.

I would chalk that up to composition and lighting blunders not the objects themselves.

Kitbashing has always been apart of object usage. We could use campaign and multiplayer assets in infinite ways. It's better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it. In my books, 343's art direction aside, the more options the better.

This doesn't look that bad unless you think about it trying to be Forerunner. Then it's the most disgusting thing I've ever seen.
