Had an interesting discussion yesterday with @Kell Of Scots about 343's art direction. Let's get the obvious out of the way - Bungie and 343 had very different directions for the Halo series. I'm sure most of us here prefer Bungie's direction as it conveyed different emotions and arguably stronger artistic vision, whereas 343's is is less subtle and more standardized (generic). While I personally like my own interpretation of 343's art (having been a fan of the color scheme in Halo 4's Midnight mission and some areas of Halo 5's Genesis), it dawned on me while listening to older Halo music that I actually was excited when entering Forerunner spaces in the past. Like, this perfectly describes the Forerunners. Mysterious, yet wondrous and adventurous. Like you were still invited to explore. The old Forerunner had monolithic architecture, gentler curves, softer shades and they were more integrated in nature, so they spoke to the fantasy side of art. With 343's art, it's very busy with lights and shapes while lacking purposeful structures and skews much further into futuristic sci-fi. Perhaps the reason I liked the Genesis mission in the game was that it was less of that and more natural. Same goes for the Covenant stuff. @MultiLockOn mentioned that old school Covenant felt religious like it was the architecture of a cult group worshipping a false god, and it shows. All of their stuff had a sacred and spiritual feeling and they were almost all symmetric and centered around some sort of structure. 343's Covenant on the other hand are insects, crawling around in the shadows of their former selves. Almost as if 343 saw the Scarab and prefabbed their entire Covenant aesthetic off of it. **** 343, etc.
I just listened to 6 hours worth of podcast between Joe Rogan and Milo and I don't think I disagreed with Milo on a single thing
Personally I think 343 did a great job on enviromental designs (expecially Sanghelios) and absolutely dog **** on character designs (elites and spartan armor look terrible) Also, I dont think it makes so much sense that Covenant architecture stays consistent considering we no longer have the prophets (so the religious theme isnt as important) and we are fighting an entirely new faction on a different plant. A lot of the old Covenant designs were very random and didnt seem to make a whole lot of sense (basically any Covenant themed mission in halo 2) 343 should just have the guys who make Halo 2A campaign do the art for Halo 6. if you liked the Milo one you will love Gavin McInnes. He basically covers the same stuff but he's more entertaining.
I'll look him up. I have a 2 hour train ride to and from work so I've been burning through podcasts. Anything involving smart conservatives is welcome.
First mission of the game is noisy Blue team is full of bulbous round human **** Meridian is a generic industrial theme with good colors Genesis is good for the most part Sanghelios has good art but noisy design Sunion belongs in a different game The missions after that were boring repetitive forerunner environments. The Covenant missions made perfect sense though considering that they all took place on various areas of High Charity.
hmm I thought Sunion fit perfect with the elites theme. those last couple forerunner missions were absolutely **** gameplay wise, but I still consider the art better than some of bungies stuff. I do think Halo 3's Guardian and Epitaph forerunner designs are fantastic though. I do somewhat agree on the human architecture. in some areas its very basic human sci fi garbage.

Yes as I have said before 343 designers wanted to make a painting rather than a map. They seem to be focused on the capabilities of the GPU and demonstrating their prowess on getting the most color out of it with no concern or apparent awareness to how it impacts immersion and emotion of players. There really seems to be a new generation of level designers that lost the art of game play.
Pointing out the lame Forerunner designs of 343 is getting really old but when I think of Epitaph or Guardian or Reach's Forerunner stuff or any campaign environment I can't help myself... It's so bad. I hate it.
Honestly I don't see why they don't outsource talent. Ever since forge halo has been a uniquely wonderful hub for various art styles, you'd think they'd pull from what is technically their property
Joe Rogan's too much of a ham for me, But his thing with Jordan Peterson was pretty neat - the guy's an intellectual madman Edit: I see I was beaten to the punch :^)
Microsoft should just have Saber Interactive make the next halo game lol they did such an amazing job on halo 2a. I do still hold out some hope because of all the firing/re-assigning positions 343 has done in the last year they should be performing like a brand new developer this time around.
