By die, I mean it's not going to have the staying power. Like Counter Strike and Quake, theres not enough gunskill in OW to make it last. I'll stand by that honestly, I don't think pro overwatch has more than 4~ years in it. Unless ANOTHER OW comes out. --- Double Post Merged, Feb 26, 2017 --- Never forget
I think the only thing that could justify an Overwatch 2 would be some sort of cooperative campaign, or even something you could play single player with. During October they released a horde mode that I think has a ton of potential to be built upon. If anything kills competitive Overwatch, it'll be the lack of a diverse amount of gametypes. There's really only 3 different PVP modes, some of them meshed together to a certain extent. I think Blizzard has said they want to flesh out the CTF mode they debuted last month, but it needs a lot of work to be balanced for competitive play. I think it will thrive for a long while because of its lack of an emphasis on gun skill. You can't really compare the game directly to competitive FPS games, because it's quite a different beast.
I'm here to say that nothing will ever have as much staying power competitively as Quake/CSGO did. Or do, rather. I'm also here to argue that that is entirely because of the fact that they are the originals in their "fields" and nothing more
I think it will. Maybe not to the extent of Counterstrike or Quake, but I honestly don't see the point in making that comparison. I don't think any FPS games will ever reach that point again, simply because of how the gaming industry has changed. The current average gamer is a lot different then the ones back then, and so I don't think a new IP, even of the same quality, would ever reach that point of competitive throughput. I think in 4 years, the game will only have more players. Overwatch boasts a very similar formula to that of League of Legends, which is currently the most played game of all time. Heck, Overwatch even has the advantage of new maps, where as league just gets a face-lift with the same layout like every 100 years. Also, there is plenty of Gun skill in Overwatch. It becomes extremely obvious when you watch the high end players like I have for the entirety of the games lifespan. These guys are doing things that I wouldn't think possible a while back, and there is no sign of their skill progression slowing down anytime soon.

That was a really interesting comp and strategy using that comp for Rogue in the first round. That Genji and Tracer were up in everyone's face.
Ya'll are just a bunch of losers whom'st've will never understand the sheer wit and skill it takes to play Bob the Builder Online (TM) for the new Leap Frog Plus (TM).
Super Smash didn't invent the fighting genre, what it did that was new and original to the genre was change the health/life system to be designed around knocking the enemy off of the platform. Funny enough, lots of the techniques that increased skill gap such as L canceling and wave dashing are glitches. I also love how after all these years, the Meta and tier list are constantly changing.
