Any well designed competitive game can be played casually, but no casually designed game can play competitive.
Pokemon isn't comeptitively designed? Explain EVs, IVs and all that good stuff The game is literally built around the concept of battling
I agree with that. So then the real question is, why NOT give the casual players a mode where they can melt their brain? Nuketown/warzone/firefight for example. I like game modes that challenge my thinking process, but also enjoy dumb fun. Everybody does, why can't we design for both? If you only design for, or specialise in one side of the spectrum than that's fine too. But dev wise you are missing out on an untapped market/ demand.
The way I see it, Halo 5 was built from the ground up for casual play. That is why they made Warzone and tied the entire UI into that feature. It's the casual brainless mode people wanted. But even that can be taken over by full fire teams if desired. On the other hand, you should want to help fuel additional content for the core scene. And because well designed content can appease both parties, it only makes sense to me for that to be the goal. I mean Arena isn't just sweaty nerd playlists, there is also action sack, griffball, and stuff to throw on when you want to just mess around. Which is fine, but I think the title is in an identity crisis right now, in the same way Call of Duty is. While 5 is more competitive than 4, it feels like a different game entirely separate from the franchise. Recently Activision announced Call of Duty 2017 is going back to it's roots. I can only hope that Halo 2018 does the same thing.
