Nothing wrong with prefabs and its cool to see them, I just don't think some cool structure some dude made should bump a full featured map and I feel like it is unfair for map creators. A section for prefabs would fix this.
I agree in theory, but it's honestly not as easy to implement as you might expect. To me, there are only 2 realistic possibilities: 1)You add more tabs in the Maps section. There are currently tabs for Newest, Featured, Top Maps, and Most Downloaded. You'd need to add at least two more tabs - Maps & Prefabs. This would allow people to see only one or the other. An alternative to this would be to just have Prefabs not show up under the 'Newest' tab, but I don't think that's even possible. I could be wrong. 2)You add a second section on the site header called 'Prefabs', which would be located next to 'Maps'. This would separate the content submissions into two different sections, which could potentially be very confusing and result in a lot of content being posted in the wrong locations (some people would probably still post their prefabs in the Maps section just to make sure it gets seen). The other problem with this is that I believe there are already tentative plans to utilize the currently vacant space in the header. If that ends up coming to fruition, it would take priority over the prefabs (because it'd be more important and beneficial to the site/community overall than a Prefab section would). It would unfortunately also leave zero real estate in the header, meaning that there literally wouldn't be enough room for Prefabs there. So, the problem isn't that there aren't potential solutions. It's just that those solutions aren't as simple to put in place as you may think for a variety of reasons. Having said that, I know there's been plenty of discussion about this amongst the staff. It's recognized as an important problem to solve, and it's not simply being ignored, despite the fact that it may appear that way.
This can get out of hand way too quick. You can spam 30 prefabs in an hour and all maps get buried in a pile of crap. Well made and fun crap, but still. It kinda surprises me the staff haven't thought of this yet. Well maybe now. Don't get me wrong, this website is run great and you guys are usually on top of things and I'm sure this will be fixed or taken care of in the near future.
I also agree, having prefabs in the map section should be a no-no. If we cant get a prefabs section then we should make an official thread for it where people can add a title and a picture.
I think this would be the best course of action. It would provide the useful resource without clogging up what the site is about. I'm working on a sanghelios themed map and would love to share some of the assets I've made with everyone, but I don't think a whole portion of the website should be dedicated to it.
I really don't feel like having a giant prefabs tab next to maps is confusing. As I look at it I don't feel like the website has a choice and the maps section is already flooding. The website either gets a prefabs section or dozens of beautiful creations get bumped down by prefabs. Its already happening and it would be crazy to think it won't get worse. Something needs to happen to control this before it actually becomes an issue. Post maps in the maps section and post prefabs in the prefabs section.... I am well aware that it is not easy to add a prefabs tab, but I don't think the site has a choice and it is clearly already getting flooded with prefabs. If you ask me an endless list of prefabs and maps mixed in will be more confusing since some people wont be able to tell whats a prefab and whats a map.
A prefab forum may be an easier solution instead of making its own tab? Maybe even put them in the map section but create a prefab category? I think they should definitely be clearly separate.
Anything really, a rule, a forum, just something before this becomes a huge issue. I just think the tab would be the best solution. Maybe force prefabs in forums then take your time to add a prefabs section since it is no easy task? Kind of like giving the prefabs a rental home before moving them in.
yeah i really thought this would have been thought out more throughly UI-wise considering we've known about prefabs for months.
There is a prefab category, which you'll see on the left side of the screen within the maps section. The problem is that the standard view shows all categories in one list, rather than separating them out. I personally don't see a prefab forum as a good solution at all. There are a number of downsides to that option, but the main one is that you lose download links, and there's no requirement to post pictures of your prefab. If I haven't made it clear yet, I totally agree with you all on this issue overall. I just think that all of the proposed solutions are either not good, or not easy (or in some cases even possible) to implement. This was on the staffs radar long, long ago, and was an ongoing point of discussion. Hopefully a reasonable solution will be introduced soon. TLDR: Staff is lazy and dumb, and we should riot.
Wow I didn't even notice the prefab section, they could literally just exclude anything in that category on the front page and Forgehub would be just fine. A little weird how its considered a map though but its the only way to have them here right now. What should I bring to the riot? Standard pitchfork or heavy artillery?
Yeah, as I mentioned in my first post, I'm not sure it's possible to just exclude them from the list. If it is, then that's the best solution. Regarding the riot, just bring some extra spicy memes. I'll take care of the rest.
