Hello dear friends and Infection fans!

As we all know, at this point Infection is still a sincerely missed classic amongst the gametypes present in Halo 5. Ever since Bungie turned the zombie mode into an official on disc game mode in Halo 3, it has been immensely popular within the community, among players and forgers alike. With the seemingly endless possibilities of the new Forge tool, one may often wonder what kind of incredible content could be created - if only Infection was yet released. My friend @PA1NTS from BIOC already posted a thread over here with suggested settings and traits for a Halo 5 iteration of Infection.

But the wait could be over sooner rather than later! As Josh Holmes from 343 Industries has confirmed in a tweet, Infection will be coming at some point. We may not know when, but we now do know that it will. Here's the tweet:

Again, obviously news like this doesn't provide us with any specific information. But at least now it's a certainty that to forge an Infection map in advance wouldn't be pointless. This means that it wouldn't hurt to start thinking about Infection maps to forge. What would be better than to have an immediate database of Infection maps to play once the gametype sees the light of day? That is why I would like to encourage you all to start making maps already. The sooner the better. I would love to see what we all together are capable of with Halo 5's Forge in terms of Infection related creations.

As you all know, I'm very fond of Infection myself. Therefore I once founded the BIOC group. This adds further to the fact that an appeal such as the one above, wouldn't make much sense if we wouldn't be committing to it ourselves. That is why I and several others have also gone ahead and have gotten infested in preparing some Infection content of our own.
Here are some pictures that may serve as inspiration when getting started with something of yours:

I don't typically play infection. What style of gameplay is desirable? Holding a position, or being forced to run around and constantly moving?

Ideally you'd be talking about Hivemind style. In case you're not familiar with Hivemind: it was a community driven variant of Infection from Halo 4 that made usage of Free Roam Infection style of gameplay: scavenging the map for weapons, being encouraged to stick together as humans in a valuable holdout location but never allowing for campable or abusable spots. Typically a Hivemind consists of various different locations that naturally invite humans to stay there and put up their defenses, without being exploitable in any way. The same goes for zombies, they shouldn't be able to overrun a place with too much ease, but if using teamwork in a smart way it shouldn't be impossible either.
So to answer your question: a little bit of both basically. Being on the move but also taking refuge at valuable spots throughout the game.

A map that caters to both those playstyles is ideal but there has been maps where it is best to run around (or drive) and others where the idea is to hold positions as long as you can and fall back when needed or when available. Infection is one of those modes that has the most versatility when it comes to designing maps or even variations of the gametype itself. An example of the versatility is Jenga from Halo 3. As long as the map or gametype is balanced people will have fun, actually even in some situations when it is unbalanced it can be fun for both sides. From what i have seen, infection is one of those mode that you have to actively try to get wrong in order to fail.

There are different types of infection maps. Some maps are are based on all the humans holding out in one location (holdout maps), some maps have the humans progress through the level at a fixed rate (linear maps), and some are more open/free roam, where the player decides if they want to hold out or explore.

It's funny you bring up that idea. I've been working on some maps myself. One is a remake of "Close the Door" from Halo 3. I've already completed that one. The other one is a map I'm calling "Mayors House" which is set at a villa turned evac point for a town after a zombie outbreak in the middle of a storm. The people have to restart a generator and then survive. Though restarting the generator has some pluses, it also has some negatives that come as a result in addition to the risk of braving the zombies to restart it.

Sounds really cool man! Do you have some pictures to give us an impression of both maps?

I can only imagine the kinds of things that will happen with scripting and timers coming along as well as they are.

I have a few ideas, and am working on one currently. I would recommend checking out Forge Labs on YouTube. He has a template competition currently. You have to build an Infection map including the toxic waste already on the map.

Do I remake Bart's Manor from Reach? Maybe.

That's a seriously dark and creepy map. It's too bad the player is wearing the Halo Mythic Armour of Light Bulb. Just another setting we should be able to adjust.

As amazing as this looks, it probably wouldn't play very well. IMO looks to be more of an aesthetic map than anything else.
