So while getting accustomed to the new forge mechanics, I started building BTB sized map above the Glacier canvas because I liked the look of the morning lighting and snow. I was able to build most of it without issue but the lightmapping budget steadily crept to 100%. From what I've seen, however, once you break the soft budget nothing major should happen and the only real negative effect should be lower quality shadows. Instead, a decent amount of the objects turned pitch black ala Halo Reach. This specifically affected a large number of the stair pieces on the map, as well as a few other random objects. I could cut down on objects in some areas but I've only used about 370 which isn't very much. I then decided to turn off Baked Lighting for less essential objects to reduce the lightmap budget. I got it down to about 70%, but it didn't make difference. I tried moving the map to a different area of the canvas, without any change. While initially forging the map I noticed some of the objects turning all black, but they would return to normal once I generated lighting. Is there any way to remedy this and have any of you had this happen as well? If it has happened, is it limited to Glacier or is it an issue for the entire forge? Is the lightmapping engine really so weak that I can only use 1/3 of available objects before the map starts seeing issues? I can provide screenshots if needed.
I've also faced significant light map issues on Glacier. I've been forging a 4 v 4-sized map in the chasm near the bottom of the canvas, and I have had some objects, namely cylinders, rings, and stairs, constantly lighting darker than the surrounding objects. I passed 100% light map at only 300 objects, which were mostly cylinders, rings, blocks, and some natural terrain/ rocks. I have managed to find pieces that do light correctly to replace the ones that are still broken at 101% light map, which is the lowest I can get it by deleting almost all non-essential objects. I suspect that the canvas has some issues, as I have seen several map forged on Alpine that use more objects and yet are nowhere close to 100% light map. Round objects may also be contributing, but I have noticed that strange objects, like a few of the smaller blocks, were causing light map to increase disproportionate to their size or complexity.
Interesting. I did use a decent amount of rings. They were also to the first objects to start blacking out. I'm probably going to reforge on Alpine and see if it has the same issues.
