    Halo Community Update 5.12.15
As we get closer and closer to the end of May, the weeks start to blend together. The days get longer, news and announcements slow down quite a bit, and teams across the studio focus in on upcoming experiences. For the Halo 5: Guardians team, this means perfecting the polish and presentation of new, never-before-seen goodness that awaits. Across the studio, the MCC team hammers away on upcoming game updates. I sit somewhere in the middle, furiously running back and forth between the two, checking out what they’re working on, and getting in on as many playtests as I can, including the latest Halo 5: Guardians Arena maps, the stormy shores of Relic and the devastated streets of New Mombasa found within ODST, and [REDACTED], which we’ll be sharing more about later this year.

As I started to say, these next few weeks will be a bit lighter on the news front, but we’ve got a few things that I’m excited to talk about at the moment. Let’s get into it.

    FICTIONAL FORAYS
    [IMG]

If you’re a Halo fiction fanatic, you’re likely caught up on the latest issue of Canon Fodder. If not, you’re missing out - in the most recent blog, Grim covers the new cover art and book description for Halo: Last Light, the recent turn of events in Ben Giraud’s #HUNTtheTRUTH adventures (episode 7 – “WHO’S LISTENING” is available now on Halo Channel, SoundCloud, and iTunes, complete with what might just be the most intense cliffhanger yet), and the currently-underway “Hunt The Signal” contest. Check out all of this and more here.

Also, if you haven’t yet checked out Halo: Nightfall, or you’d like to watch it again in its entirety, be sure to tune in tonight (5/12) at 7:15 PM ET/PT on Showtime, or during the encore showing tomorrow on Sho 2 at 10:00 PM.

    Halo: The Master Chief Collection
We’ve got a few different things moving on the MCC front, including this month’s content update, which will include Relic and ODST. As we get closer to the update, we’ll have additional details about how these goodies will be available, as well as what else will be included. Lastly, we’re happy to announce today that Relic will be re-mastered as Remnant in Halo 2: Anniversary.

Relic, soon to be re-mastered in Halo 2: Anniversary as Remnant

In the last blog, we provided some background on MCC playlists – how the initial design was created, some of the feedback we’ve received, and what types of changes we’re making moving forward based on your feedback. If you’d like to catch up, head here. I’d also like to thank you for the feedback that this blog received, and ask that you continue to provide your comments, as it very much shapes what will come in future weeks.

Last week, we made fixes that allowed us to update the Halo 2: Anniversary playlist to 4v4, as well as Rumble Pit to 6-8 players. As you may have read on Twitter, upping BTB to 8v8 remains a top priority, and the team is working on necessary fixes to ensure that 16 player matches function correctly in matchmaking. Next up, let’s get into the new stuff.

    Today's playlist update
Our most recent playlist update just dropped, which means that Team Objective is now the featured playlist, and it contains some of the greatest objective hits from Halo: CE, H2, H2A, H3, and H4. Last week, we also talked about your feedback shaping playlist design, and SWAT fans will be happy to know that the playlist is here to stay, and will remain in the lineup. We’ve also gone through the feedback you provided last week, and have reorganized the Halo: CE voting options to increase the occurrence and variety of Slayer game types, and voting slots 1 and 2 will now only contain Slayer game types. Some of you have also called out that this playlist update incorrectly added motion tracker to Halo: CE, and work is already underway to get this corrected as soon as possible.

Additionally, we've added some new maps to select playlists, including Burial Mounds to Halo 2 Classic (as well as Team Objective), Exile and Harvest CTF to the Halo 4 playlist, and Longest to Team Slayer, and also reduced the occurrence of Team Slayer BR on Warlord in H2A. We also updated the Halo Championship Series playlist with the latest tournament settings, including the addition of Warlord & Lockdown Oddball, updated score limit for King of the Hill, and an updated Shrine Assault map variant. Last up, we’ve updated Halo 3 map variants, which means Pit Stop, Sand Tarp, Epilogue, Boundless, and all other updated variants can now be found in matchmaking.

While we’re excited about each of these, we know many of you are also itching to know what’s up with more ranked playlists. So, let’s talk about just that.

Our May update will include with it some improvements to the ranking system, and we’ll provide full details as we get closer. While we don’t yet have an exact date for when ranks will begin to roll out to additional playlists (we’re aiming for as soon as possible after this CU), here’s a sneak peek at which of the current playlists will be ranked:

    • Halo: CE
    • Halo 2 Classic
    • Halo 3
    • Halo 4
    • Team Hardcore
This means that playlists like SWAT, Rumble Pit, Big Team Battle, and each featured playlist will remain unranked, but will use skill matching. Additionally, as each game’s individual playlist will become ranked, we’ll be moving Team Slayer to an unranked playlist within the next few updates (most likely in June), to ensure that there is a strong mix of ranked vs social experiences within MCC matchmaking. While the appeal of a who’s-the-best-all-around-Halo-Slayer ranked playlist is a particularly interesting one, we also see great value in a social slay-‘em-all experience, and we wanted to provide a head’s up in case you’re on the grind.

Now, we’re certainly well aware that some players would like to see ranked Team SWAT, and some may want unranked H3. The playlist lineup, by its very nature, cannot accommodate every possible player preference, but we’ll be keeping an eye on player feedback as well as data to ensure that all players have a go-to experience, if not many, waiting for them each time they head into matchmaking. For example, if a certain playlist begins to have a larger player base than others, we’ll start to think about making changes and ensuring that an appropriate amount of content – both ranked and unranked – is available for the audience. Similarly, if we find that future featured playlists perform particularly well, we’ll work on how to best integrate these game types and/or similar experiences into the lineup.

The return of Team Doubles, Halo 3’s Hardcore game types, and as mentioned earlier, 8v8 BTB all remain on the way as well. While some of these require some additional updates before they can be integrated into matchmaking, they remain a priority for the team, and we’ll let you know when these updates are close. As for Team Doubles, it will indeed return as a permanent playlist with an increased variety in terms of voting options.

    HCS Update
    [IMG]

Online tournament play is underway for Season 2 of the Halo Championship Series, and we have six online cups remaining until HCS Indianapolis presented by PGL, the largest LAN tournament thus far, which will offer $50,000 in prizing. If you haven’t yet plugged into the HCS this season, here are a few ways to get started:

    Halo Community Update 5.22.15

It’s been a short while since we last spoke, and as some new goodness is on the horizon, I think it’s appropriate we talked a bit about it. To begin, the additions of Remnant (Relic) and Halo 3: ODST draw nearer, and the team is currently finalizing the exact availability date for these drops. Once locked, we’ll be providing the full details of what’s to come, including the exact timing of the releases, the ODST achievement list, and more. As always, we’ll also be providing the full details of what’s included in the next content update as soon as it’s available.

As I type this, the playlist team also continues to finalize changes for our next playlist update, which is currently scheduled to drop shortly after the content update. There are a few changes inbound, so let’s get to ‘em.

    Playlist Updates
First up, let’s talk about Remnant. The new Relic remake will be making its way into the matchmaking lineup shortly after the map becomes available, and will be integrated into Big Team Battle and Team Halo 2: Anniversary with an increased weighting, to ensure that you have ample opportunity to battle it out for control of the base, Sniper Rifles, vehicles, shores, and wherever else you’d like to set up shop. In Big Team Battle, Team Slayer, 1 Flag CTF, 1 Bomb Assault, and 3 Plots will be available, and in Team H2A, 1 Flag CTF and 1 Bomb Assault will be waiting for you.

    Team Doubles
    [IMG]

Ah, Team Doubles. A fan-favorite gathering of four players who battle to control an arsenal of power weapons that often outnumber them. There’s something special about Doubles, a bond that is created between partners through the ups and downs. But I’ll spare the details, as I think we’re all on the same page: Doubles is awesome, and many of us enjoy going up against two foes with our best friend at our side. So, we’re bringing it back as a permanent playlist, with improved voting options. Also, it will indeed be ranked when we roll out additional rankings.

Overall, the decision to make Team Doubles a mainstay required that some changes be made. For starters, we’ve received overwhelming feedback from all of you stating that it’s at the top of the list for many players. For us, this meant we needed to make it happen. As we mentioned previously, Halo: The Master Chief Collection has a substantial amount of what we’d call “essential” playlists, which doesn’t give us a ton of room to play with. As a result, we’ll need to make some cuts eventually, but for now, Team Doubles will be replacing Team Objective (the current featured playlist), and featured playlists will be put on a temporary hold as we evaluate the health and popularity of all playlists. We’ll keep you updated on findings and updates that are in the pipeline.

As I started to say earlier, after Team Doubles' first appearance in matchmaking, we took some time to really evaluate the voting options, ordering, game types, and more. Thanks to substantial amounts of feedback on the forums, reddit, Twitter, and elsewhere, we’ve made the following changes:

    • Halo 2 Classic: SMG Slayer weighting significantly reduced
    • Halo 3: Updated map variants to the latest matchmaking versions (Pit Stop, etc)
    • Halo 3: VIP removed
    • Halo 3: All AR-start Slayer replaced with BR-start
    • Halo 3: Added Heretic Ball, King, and CTF (with low weighting)
    • Halo 3: Added BR-start Slayer for Citadel and Assembly
We’re excited to get Doubles back in the mix, and we’ll see you in the playlist. As always, thanks for your continued feedback as we look to improve your matchmaking experiences and create .gifv worthy opportunities for greatness and enjoyment.

    Objective: More Objectives

Team Objective has been great. It’s provided a wide breadth of content that may otherwise lose the vote against Team BRs on Lockout. We’ve been enjoying it, and we hope you have too. If you haven’t yet hopped in, be sure to do so, as it will only be around for a bit longer. As we mentioned above, Team Objective will be rotated out to make room for Team Doubles, but we’ve also received feedback that you’d like to see increased opportunities to play objective game types throughout matchmaking, so we’re making some changes that’ll make this transition a bit easier, and matchmaking better.

In Halo 2 Classic, Halo 3, Halo 4, and Halo 2: Anniversary, the following changes will be made to voting options in the next playlist update:

    • You’ll always have an objective game type option in slot 1
    • You’ll always have a Slayer BRs option in slot 2
    • You’ll always have a standard (non-BR) Slayer option in slot 3
Now, this is a significant change, and here’s how we’re thinking about it: For starters, objective game types often lose the vote to Slayer or Slayer BRs due to ties, and this change will default to objective game types in the event of a draw. Slayer BRs will be available in slot 2 and break any Slayer ties, and if the majority of players would like to play a standard Slayer variant, it will be chosen. It’s also worth noting here that if you really only prefer to play Slayer experiences, the Team Slayer playlist ensures that no Flags or Bombs will get in the way of your Killing Sprees, and both Halo: CE and Rumble Pit offer Slayer-heavy experiences.

We’re confident that this update will help improve variety for these playlists, but we’ll be keeping an eye on feedback, and will continue to make adjustments.

    More Ranks
As we mentioned previously, the upcoming CU includes with it specific ranking improvements, and we’re looking to add ranks to additional playlists (Halo: CE, Halo 2 Classic, Halo 3, Halo 4, Team Hardcore, and Team Doubles) shortly after the CU drops to ensure that things are working properly. As a reminder, at the time of this playlist update, Team Slayer will also become unranked, in order to ensure that there is a healthy variety of social experiences within matchmaking.

Can we have a few more things?
Yes! Here are a few more things that are on the way:

    • In SWAT, we’ll be updating H2A respawn time to a more appropriate 3 seconds, rather than the current setting, “way too long”
    • In Halo 2 Classic, we’ll be updating BR-start objective game types to include “BR” in the naming convention, to avoid confusion during voting
    • We’ll be correcting Halo: CE variants across matchmaking to no longer utilize motion tracker
    HCS Update
    [IMG]

Season 2 of the Halo Championship Series continues with the next online tournament this weekend. If you haven’t yet, be sure to sign up for HCS Cup #3 presented by ESL - $3,000 are up for grabs, as well as HCS points. To see the latest standings, head here, and to watch the top teams stream on Sunday, head over to the MCC page on the Twitch directory, or stay tuned to Twitch.tv/Halo for a curated selection of hosted streams.

Since the start of Season 2, we’ve been working with pro players to fine tune the map Shrine, specifically in regards to Red vs. Blue balance as it pertains to spawning and line of sight discrepancies. While some Halo Championship Series pro players have had time to test out this map, we wanted to open up the final stage of testing to the rest of the HCS competitors and fans. To get the full details on what’s been changed as well as instructions on downloading the map, head here.

That should do it for this update. Have a happy and safe holiday weekend, and we'll talk again soon.

    Until next time,
    Bravo

    Halo Community Update 5.29.15
    [IMG]

As I put together the very blog you are reading, the upcoming content update, the addition of the Halo 2: Anniversary map Remnant, and the Halo 3: ODST campaign enter the final stages of the certification process. Over the past few days, you may have seen ODST appearing in the Xbox Store with placeholder dates, as the Xbox team has been running final redemption tests. We’re currently working closely with the Xbox Live team to finalize exact timing and availability, and will provide an update once a final drop time is locked.

To help hold you over, we’ve got some early details on what’s to come – read on.

In addition to adding Remnant and enabling the download of ODST, this next content update will also introduce some fixes and features for ranking, parties and roster, UI, and more. Specifically, the team has been working on one specific item that we'd like to detail now. Currently in MCC, viewing a player’s File Share requires that they be an online friend or accessible via campaign leaderboards, and in an effort to make sharing and finding awesome maps and game types much easier, we’ve implemented some tools that will allow you to do so. Here’s the rundown of how things will work after the update:

    New “Find Player” Search
At the main menu, press “X” to bring up the roster. Next, select yourself by pressing “A” on your Gamertag. (Not the game session) [IMG]

Once you’ve downloaded the CU, you’ll see “Find Player” under the menu, which will allow you to lookup any player (regardless of whether or not you are Friends with them, or if they are online.)

[IMG]Next up, enter the gamertag of the player you are looking for. [IMG]You’ll then be directed to the “Player Details” page for this player. Select File Share, and proceed to grab the files you’re looking for.

This will easily allow you to discover and download new favorite maps and game types, and we’ll be on the lookout for these as well as we highlight some favorites. If you have some crafty canvases or wacky custom games you’ve created, or want to share one of your favorites, make sure to post it in the Community Creations section.

As always, we’ll have the full patch notes and details once the CU becomes available.

    Playlists and Ranks
Last week, we talked about a few things on the playlist front, including the return of Team Doubles as a permanent playlist, new voting option ordering for Halo 2 Classic, Halo 3, Halo 4, and Halo 2: Anniversary that will improve gametype variety, the addition of more ranked playlists, and more. For the full scoop on what’s on the way with the next playlist update, head here. As mentioned last week, we’re working to get this playlist update out shortly after the CU drops. After the CU becomes available (we’re aiming for a few days after), we’ll also be adding rankings to Halo: CE, Halo 2 Classic, Halo 3, Halo 4, Team Hardcore, and Team Doubles.

    HCS Update
[IMG]In Cup #3, Evil Geniuses managed to pull out another victory, increasing their first place lead in the HCS Season 2 Standings. To sign up for this weekend’s cup and compete for free, assemble your team and head here.

Last week, we discussed updates that were being made to help improve balance on the HCS version of Shrine. Based on feedback we’ve received from professional teams and players, this new variant will be integrate into HCS play starting with ESL Cup #5, taking place on June 6-7. To avoid confusion during this weekend’s cup, the final map variants will be uploaded into the Official HCS File Share on Monday, June 1. If you’d like to begin practicing on the map before then, the map is available for CTF and Slayer under “HCS Shrine April Spawn Test.” Come next week, this version will be replaced, an Assault-friendly variant will be added, and the old variants will be removed.

Before we move on, we must mention Evil Geniuses’ recent teamtage, “Untouchable.” With incredible clips from Snipedown, Roy, Lethul, and Lunchbox, we can all rejoice that incredible editor Muggsy has labeled this montage “Teamtage One,” indicating that there might just be more to come. Enjoy below:

To keep up with more EG Halo videos, keep an eye on the Evil Geniuses YouTube channel.

    Over-Achiever - Halo 3: ODST campaign achievements
[IMG]To help you prepare to drop, we’ve provided a sneak peek at the achievements list for the Halo 3: ODST campaign, plus one for Remnant. It's a long list, so we've saved it for last in today's update. Without further ado, here are the achievements you'll be able to unlock for the ODST campaign within Halo: The Master Chief Collection: (Follow the link at the bottom of the post for the full list)

That’ll do for this week. The shores of Remnant and streets of ODST are nearly upon us. For the absolute latest on the upcoming content, news, and more, keep an eye on Waypoint and @Halo on Twitter.

    Bravo

not a fileshare system but a player search.. kind of a round about way but at least it makes sharing maps soooooo much easier now.

but, i think it might be a bit too late now.

I placed 32 blocks on Remnant and frame rate is already a problem with 2PL.

So much for using it as a forge canvas.

[edit] Not a forge issue. 2 player frame rate is absolutely horrible on the base map.

    Halo Community Update 6.5.15
Over the past few years, I’ve found that seeing the calendar flip to June 1 is an immediate reminder that E3 is getting dangerously close. You also know that E3 is getting close when you find yourself eating dinner with several hundred friends each night at the studio, and battling the clock to complete a variety of things that may be revealed quite soon. The playtest labs are full nearly all day, as playtests go into the late evening each night, with a variety of capture cards hooked up to consoles, recording each and every moment in an effort to find the perfect shots to show you. With each day, E3 gets closer, and we’ll soon be talking about new experiences that await your steady hand. We've got a light blog this week, but have a few things to talk about. Let's get into it.

Last weekend, many of you suited up dropped feet first into New Mombasa during the Covenant Invasion. We watched as many of you redeemed your codes immediately and began your nighttime assault. We heard that some of you had the privilege of playing through ODST in full HD as rain came down outside, which may have added a bit more than 7.1 surround. We’d love to say this was planned, and for once we’d love to say that we wish we had rain here in Seattle, but we’re glad that many of you crash-landed into the streets of ODST…safely. Based off of the data and number of players who jumped into MCC over the weekend and this week, many of you were ready for the challenge. If you’re qualified for a free download and haven’t redeemed yet, be sure to check your Xbox Live messages, where you’ll find a fresh code waiting for you.

If you didn’t happen to catch it last week, Senior Game Designer Max Szlagor recently sat down with Joseph Staten, Halo 3: ODST’s Creative Director and Writer for a dev walkthrough of ODST. The first time I watched the rough cuts of this video, I recall getting way too excited about hearing Joseph talk about Halo development again, and based on feedback, you unsurprisingly have the same feels. To learn more about the original development of ODST, such as design goals and the precision placement of garbage and corpses, as well as how everything slots into MCC, see below, and to catch a just-released interview with Joseph, head over to this week’s Canon Fodder.

If you didn’t have a chance to play much Relic in Halo 2 Classic, and you’d like a tour of the newly released Remnant, be sure to check out the most recent episode of Breaking Down the Map here:
Be on the lookout for the return of the series on the Halo Channel as we get closer to the release of Halo 5: Guardians.

Lastly, we hope you’re enjoying and making use of the new ‘Find Player’ File Share search. To see a breakdown of how everything works, head over to last week’s update, and to find some new battlegrounds and game types, check out ForgeHub’s Community Favorites for the month of May, the Community Creations section on the Waypoint forums, or grab all the GrifballHub greatness by searching for the tag “Grifball Maps.”

    Arby and the Chief

While many of us spent the last weekend getting back into the story of ODST, our very own bs angel took a trip to Atlanta’s own MomoCon, an all-ages convention that unites fans of games, anime, comics, and more. By more, I mean that it unites two of the greatest characters within the entire franchise for the very first time.

At the con, bs angel had the pleasure of hosting the Halo: Voice Over panel with Steve Downes, voice of the Master Chief, and Keith David, voice of the Arbiter, who had never met before in-person. Yes, it’s pretty exciting stuff, and luckily our friends at Twitch captured the goodness. I have found that VO panels are particularly special, because each time one of the actors responds to a question, it is unintentionally epic, and there’s really no other way to put it. To hear stories about their inspiration and influences, characters, their run-ins with Halo fans, and even “were it so easy….”, be sure to check out the VOD link here.

So... No mention of fixing the things they broke in the latest update? Like the Halo: CE bullet magnetism? lol.

Nice to see ForgeHub get mentioned in the bulletin though.

Over the past week, you’ve gotten brand-new glimpses at the Halo 5: Guardians story. You’ve read bits and pieces about new experiences that await. You’ve been brought inside studio walls to not only meet new characters, but also the developers who are bringing them to life. With the help of GameInformer, we’ve continued to show you what the team is spending long days, nights, and weekends building. The Sprint to E3
    [IMG]

If you’re like me, and you could not handle the wait for the Halo 5: Guardians Beta this past winter, there’s a good chance you caught Season 1 of The Sprint, our Halo Channel series that follows the Halo 5: Guardians development team through thick and thin as we work towards various milestones, specifically two week “sprints,” in which deliverables and assets are tracked. We haven’t told you until now, but since the Beta, the cameras have continued to roll as the team pushes towards E3 deadlines. If you’ve ever wanted to see what it’s like inside the studio walls, The Sprint may just be for you. See below for the Season 2 trailer, and be sure to head to the Halo Channel on June 17 for the return of the series.

    Playlist Updates

This week, we made some minor but important matchmaking updates. The first of these came on Tuesday, when final ranking backend work was complete, and ranks were pushed live for the Halo 2 Classic, Halo 3, Halo 4, Team Hardcore, and Team Doubles playlists. As we mentioned previously, Team Slayer is now unranked, to ensure a balanced mix of ranked and social play. Additionally, just yesterday, we released a hotfix that resolves the aim assist issues with Halo: CE by keeping the good, and ditching the bad. This means that four-grenade starts, original weapon placement, and smaller things like the loading bar are here to stay, but the aim assist has been reverted to the previous setting, as doing so allowed us to get things back to normal as fast as possible. With this update, we’ve also now added ranks to the Halo: CE playlist. Lastly, the CU also includes some added improvements to Halo 2: Anniversary stability. We hope these quick fixes improve your experience, and look forward to hearing your feedback and thoughts.

Speaking of, we’d like to continue to thank you for the playlist feedback sent over Twitter, posted to the Waypoint forums and Twitter, and elsewhere – this feedback continues to shape our future playlist updates, the next of which will be hitting in the near future with the return of Team Snipers as a featured playlist. Also, the team is working to resolve issues that are preventing Halo 3’s Hardcore variants from being brought into matchmaking, but these do indeed remain a priority. Stay tuned to these updates for the latest on what’s to come in the world of playlist updates.

To close, if you’ve been following #HUNTtheTRUTH on Halo Channel, Soundcloud, or iTunes, you’re well aware that this weekend’s episode is quite an important one. If you’d like to marathon the episodes and catch before E3, head here, plug in some headphones, and dig into the tales of Benjamin Giraud.

Due to E3 happenings, there will be no official community update next week, but we’ll have plenty of content for you – as mentioned above, be sure to tune into the Xbox Media Briefing, Xbox Daily, HaloWaypoint.com, GameInformer, and Twitter.com/Halo for all of the goodness all week long.

We’ll see you in just a few days. Until then,

    Bravo
