This is an excerpt of a graduation speech put with a pretty nifty video. It's definitely worth the watch if you can spare the time:
This movie actually made me depressed a bit. It's sad that people live this way for almost their entire career. Everyone in the video seems like mindless drones and this teaches them how to be human, sort of, I guess. He's trying to change the way we think day to day going through the motions of a life you're tired of. I hate that perspective. If you're doing something you love to do, then you're always happy. There's a lot of stress factors in day to day motions but how those factors effect you depends on your state of mind. Instead of telling someone to be happy for what you're able to experience and what you have I would be telling them to go after what makes them happy. I have been through a lot in life (very abused childhood, combat tours starting at age 18, unfaithfulness from spouse while having 2 kids) and I have come out very successful. My first goal was personal training, I'm certified and now do that to earn a living but I have a harder goal of becoming a Video Game Designer. I'm now the top honors student in Game Design at my school and trying to make a dream become reality. After working for a game comapany has been met I will strive to be a lead developer of a game even bigger than Halo or CoD. What drives me is my perspective and I think you need to always be working towards what you want to accomplish in life and if you give up and become average you're already dead. No one will ever remember you and a few months after your death you will be almost completely forgotten about except from direct family. "What's the point of being alive if you don't at least try to do something remarkable?" -Mario Novak Everyday is a gift and another chance to get one step closer to that goal. It's not about graduating from College, getting a job, and living the rest of your life doing that job. Why stop achieving? Here's my response to your video, because it's a matter of perspective. Be happy with being average or work towards something much bigger than yourself.
Wow, incredibly strange - I came across this video no less than an hour ago whilst surfing the Tube. Pretty interesting way to think about things, that's for sure.
While I agree with a lot of what you say, I;d like to mention a counter-statement to this bit. Not everyone can go off and dow hat they love. I adore stand-up comedy and think it would be awesome to do it, but I'm not funny like that. I love art, but in all likelihood, I wont be getting many commissions for a charcoal drawing. I've gone and chosen fields of study that have a need in our society, but I may not be able to get to work at what I really want after I'm done university, I might be working at Hannaford, or Burger King, or something along these lines. I would despise this, and there are many others who simply don't have the skills or desire to do what they enjoy. It's the little things for these people in these situations, as expressed in the video, that get them through the day. Those who love what they do are fortunate, and shouldn't have to rely on the little tings, but a lot can still be taken from them.
Enjoying stand up comedy and wanting to be a stand up comedian are two very completely different things. I believe you could be if you really wanted to, people aren't born stars in what they like. You have to work towards it. I strongly disagree with you sir. Even a dry humor person can become a very comedic person if they strive towards it and people who don't believe so have the wrong perspective in life. People just are set on that idea b/c they don't really want to be one that bad. It's a cop-out. They wouldn't want to dedicate a good chunk of their life towards it.
I've also got a little something I'd like to throw out there. Hulk, let's say you get that lead developer job you're aspiring for. There will still be times where you'll be overcome with work/stress/etc. There will still be instances where you'll be that guy at the grocery store, thinking that everyone is in your way, keeping you from doing other things that need to be done. I took that video not as pertaining to your job or career, but a way to think about those times in your life when you're not at your best.
Ok brother, those people are already stressed to no end by the time they get to the grocery store and I don't live a "9-5" job so I don't go during rush hour. That's another benefit to doing what you love. I don't let stuff like that bother me anyways, patience is a good trait to learn. When you're happy, you're patient.
All I'm saying is, almost every person will at some point in their life have a situation or go through a phase when they're more stressed than usual, where the way of thinking presented in that video would be beneficial.
That's good for you. Some people do, though, so this video presents a good alternative way of thinking about things.
Ok, so thanks for putting words in my mouth. I'm not saying anyone should be a mindless drone. I honestly have no idea how you got that from what I said.
Went ahead and posted this here anyways: You went full circle with everything and now we're back at ground zero. You took the video as, "a way to think about those times in your life when you're not at your best." I tried saying that people think this way b/c they are 'mindless drones.' People that act this way and look at the bad side of things day in and day out b/c that's who they have become. They hate their jobs, they hate their life, they get mad at everything. I'm saying change your perspective, change who you are and the way you look at things (like the ones in the video) will change as well but far better. The video does it wrong in my opinion. It's pretty much saying don't let your sucky life get to you instead of saying make the mostt of your day and strive to be the best you can. My video tells you to make the most of your day, not open up your mind a little and look past the stress. By saying, "Good for you" you're pretty much telling me to shut up in a very nice way
That was a really good watch, so was your video, Fenix. But also saddens me, knowing that I've never had the motivation to really try for my goals. Hopefully I can up my gpa enough to actually be able to go to school for what I want. Getting alittle off-topic, I think its bullshit how I have a 2.3 simple gpa because my english and history grades have never been good, while math and science have always been my strengths. But the 2.3 will hold me back from alot of opportunities. I want to be a physicist, not a historian, this picture sums up what I mean. But anyways, I like the approach the speaker took with the analogy. Very fitting for a college graduation, and perceptive. People thinking about what another person is thinking, and trying to sympathize always impresses me. Unless it's one of those poor african child commercials with the rich fat white guy, **** that dude.
Thanks for sharing DC. There's a jillion people out there trying to do the same thing everyone else is. What puts you over the top is dedicate your entire life to it and become a barracuda and eat every fish in your way. Gain every advantage you can. That's how I look at it. I always want to know the latest tips, read the most up to date books, etc etc. Don't 'get by.' Get Hungry! I'm definitely not a guy who 'gets by.' Going to a crowded grocery store doesn't bother me one bit. Bumper to Bumper traffic doesn't. Those people that do get bothered by small stuff like that have never felt pain before. They are emotionally challenged day to day by the small things and that's b/c that's all the pain they ever feel. I would be the guy laughing and smiling at the people so stressed out at the grocery store. Why get upset over something so small? Really! That gets you bent out of whack? Weak sauce. I watch this video almost everyday and it sets my mind right for most of the day. Got to change your mindset... change your mind and you will change. You have to sacrifice who you are and what you have for what you want to become. That's why so many fail and give up. Don't pay attention to the video, just the audio. Yeah I'm a bodybuilder and it has bodybuilding footage but that is not the point. Stop watching after 1:30.
