343i is still judging the maps in the Community Forge FFA Playlist to determine the winners, so I figured we might as well start up some discussion about our favorite maps, what we do/don't like about the others, etc. So, if you've played any of these maps in the FFA playlist and have something to say about them, let's hear it. Who knows, maybe someone from 343i will even check in from time to time to see what we have to say. You can also vote on Certain Affinity's Facebook page here.
Yeah, Edifice is my favorite out of the maps. I haven't had the chance to play them all though. I always seem to play Assault, Blacksite, and Blood Thirst. Blacksite is probably my second favorite of the maps. Assault just feels like people always camp on the highground and never move. Blood Thirst has spawning problems and feels incredibly open. Overall I am way more impressed with these than the last community forge playlist maps. I just wish the playlist wasn't ffa
I've played at least a hundred matches of community FFA and here's what I think. Opus - Hands down my favorite, aesthetically it's gorgeous, there is good flow, and interesting combat. Most importantly, the areas are segregated enough to allow for more 1v1 battles than ANY of the other maps. This is the most important feature of a good FFA map. Black site - Hands down my LEAST favorite FFA map. One simple reason, it's too open. WAYYY too many battles end up with multiple players cleaning up other players kills. This is not good, then there's the fact that the spawning is laughable for FFA in this map. Blood thirst is another FFA map that suffers from the same problems as Black site, and that is, the battles end up being more of a "Clean up" then a true battle. Edifice is solid, I love how distinct the different areas are. Makes for memorable battles. Plaza - Fun, interesting encounters...I'm OK with this map but it's nothing that makes me squeal with joy. Malice - The long site lines combined with a lot of right angles makes this a kind of corner camping DMR dominant map.....Do not want. Serenity - Seems cool but I have probably only played a handful of games on it. Which is weird considering how i've played so much of the other maps. Can't really say a whole lot about it. It looks cool though, maybe more suited for 4v4 but still. Assault - I like this one a lot as well, but the spawning seems a little weird, specifically with the ramps on the edge of the map. It seems like you can just post up where the Railgun spawns and just slay players spawning at the bottom of the ramp indefinitely. Anyways, that's my 2 cents
Black site is easily the worst of them all. I had people instantly respawing behind me after I just killed them, I respawned behind players when they'd just killed me, not to mention every map on erosion looks terrible due to the pallet (in my opinion). The layout is decent, but too simplistic and open for my tastes. Edifice was ridiculously fun to play. It plays great, looks great, and I simply loved it. But there were some spawning issues I found. Plaza was a really fun map, but I found the railgun spawned in way too quickly every time to the point where I found myself camping the location, snagging it, and raining hell. And with more games on it i'm sure id be able to exploit areas and hold out quite easily. Havnt played any of the others but yeah hard to beat edifice tbh.
bolding is mine... I haven't played much FFA playlist because the couple matches I had did not allow for this type of combat you mention. newsflash map makers (and 343i)!! FFA does not mean getting shot in the back during every encounter! In many ways, FFA should probably mean either bigger maps or more segregation because each person is his/her own team. A 3v3 could probably be played on these same maps, but in such a case, you have only three enemies. A lot less to watch out for than in any FFA scenario.
Guys, give the map makers a break. Several of the maps were designed for gametypes other than FFA. Even then, I doubt instant respawn and ten million power weapons in Infinity Rumble helps. The kill times in this game are pretty big (lol BR) so I wouldn't put the blame for the kill-steals on the mapmakers. Expecting no one to find an ongoing engagement (note: MINIMUM 1.73 seconds long) is pretty crazy. As for Black Site, the author (GT: The Fated Fire) has put up a v2 with a center structure partially blocking some of the longest LoS. Opus, Black Site, Assault and Edifice are my favorites (although I'm biased )
I didn't call out any specific maps or map makers, just stating that in general, FFA needs more space than a team-based gametype does for the same number of people... never tried to insinuate that stolen kills aren't part of the game. In fact, it's one of my favorite parts of the game!
