BTB Preview Video Tell me what you think guys, video explains everything. Update: The map has been playtested as of last night, I have a new video of the game and wanted to know what you think now that you can see the gameplay.
I could test this on Friday if you add in spawns and weapons. if your interested RSVP here. I should have the lobby size you need.
this looks really cool, although I always felt neither asteroid was big enough for true BTB (neither is ravine or erosion terrain). but, what else can we do>?? nice work. actually it looks pretty big in the video. you incorporated that building structure which is something difficult to pull off.
i've been tackling the challenge of a really big map for a while too. from the video it seems you have gotten a really good head start on a great one! I like the rounded architectural theme used. I also enjoyed the way you used the pointy bits of a walkway cover to launch the Banshee and your piece choice for the boundaries.
The map looks interesting, I can definitely see stylistic similarities to some of your Sandbox maps in Halo 3. While the layout isn't too bad there are a few things that initially bothered me. First, the height of the Wraith platform seems like it would make that area very powerful against the attackers. From it and the adjacent building defense can see all of the map besides what is inside the impact building or deep inside attacker base. Just might want to watch how much that line of sight can control. While the banshee helps this, it also gives the banshee less places to hide, making it easy to break it down with DMR team fire. That there are also only 2 ways in to a defending flag base is also a problem most likely, though I'd like to play before making that call. The other issue was more of an aesthetic frustration. I know you are trying to make a really large map, but things like seeing part of the glass floor inside the pre-fab structure threw me off. While parts of the map look cool, it really felt to me like I was "just on Impact" most of the time I was watching. This isn't necessarily a huge issue, just something that comes with trying to work the big building into your map, as it's so recognizable. Otherwise this looks pretty cool, it feels very different from most BTB maps I've seen on disk or forged in the past few years. I'd love to get some games on here when you need testers.
Glad you took a look, I've been in need of a btb forger to advise me. Now with the banshee, I have added a silo 3 to the top of the middle structure to allow easier escape. As for the aesthetic frustrations, I completely agree. I always would prefer to make my maps appear to be different from "just a forge map on impact" or whatever canvas. That's part of the reason I have avoided making a BTB map, not that it's impossible to achieve the goal but it's harder when you have to balance that with wise piece usage.
This silo should help, I don't think the banshee will have too many issues with the height of some of the parts. As long as it can go behind the building there should be no problems, it just needs a place to escape to for a little while. For making BTB maps look like their own space, Impact is definitely the best map, as the large pieces allow you a lot of cheap surface area. For the future, I've found what is good to do is pick a small area of terrain that you can build off of it. that way you don't just have to build a floating map but you get a lot of control over the area.
I thought that's what he did on there... looked like he expanded the surface area by creating the large building structure. It seems fairly small until you really go around the entire thing and see just how much extra space he picked up in that building. a good example indeed.
That wasn't sarcasm, I actually really like Big Freeze. It's a good example on how to forge BTB maps in Halo 4.
lol, I think you read my first sentence wrong... emphasis on which word changes its meaning... "I thought that's what he DID on that map" vs "I THOUGHT that's what he did on that map". So I guess I should have said, "I suspected that's how he accomplished such a big level, and now I have confirmation from someone who happens to know"
Thanks Urban, glad to hear you enjoyed. A couple of other good examples of this are Panic Station by Duck, where the blue side's floor is a very flat area on Impact, and Tyrene Boulevard by Paints, also on Impact. Now that I think about it, we need more BTB maps on the other canvas's. RIP Mock's overwritten Erosion map. :'(
You could say that it had an impact on BTB forging..... sorry just threw up in my mouth a little after saying that.
Urban you forgot to mention my awesome Warthog driving! Can't wait to get this thing testing, it really is a nostalgic forging style similar to Halo 3's building style!
By the way, updated the map after first playtest, let me know what you think of changes I will make andwhat you think about doing update videos. Is it something you guys would watch or are videos just too long?
