So here's the story: I've been without LIVE for about 6 months and it's beginning to drive me a little crazy.. so I've been trying to connect through my mac, which apparently everyone else is able to do besides me :C So I want to connect to xbox LIVE through my mac, and I have to do everything manually because it's a mac (inb4 macs suck) On my Xbox I've connected to the Network but I can't connect to the Internet, and every time it doesn't work it says to check my DNS settings. And I'm using some random router at my school and I can't seem to get the DNS server address from them. I've tried a variety of tactics including several commands in terminal which basically ends up in an automated response generated from my school which gives me two different DNS numbers (also: why do they give me two?). I've tried all of these numbers and they don't seem to work. However, there's another thing. Several tutorials tell me to set up an Ethernet connection on my Mac, and under that connection I should choose "Manually" under "Configure IPv4" (whatever that means..). To save you from my ignorance, here's a pic..? But, after about 30 seconds of connection to the Ethernet network, my internet stops altogether, and I can't reach any sites on any of my browsers. So... I don't know what that's about.. tl;dr version: I think it comes down to finding my school's DNS server address.. but I'm not entirely sure as I'm not very tech savvy with this stuff.. All I can offer as a reward for anyone who gets it working is a 14 day xbox live access code.... yeah... I'll probably post this on some mac forum so i'll give the code to whoever (if anyone) gets LIVE to work first (I'll update the thread if it happens) If you have any other questions feel free to ask. thanks. PS: I'll <3 you forever and ever if you get this to work. I'm out of ideas at this point, I just wanna play some battlefield again :C Thanks again.
My xbox wifi adapter won't detect the router from where it's at.. and there are no ethernet ports in my room. My friends have been able to connect to LIVE through their PCs but it doesn't work for my mac (they've tried it with it too). They use virtual router or something, which works, but for some reason macs can't use this and I have to do it all manually..
There's probably a router somewhere decently close. If you find it you can run a long ethernet cable through the ceiling to your room. You'll get a much faster connection that way too. There will probably be access hatches in the hallway or a maintenance room. If not you can cut a hole in the top of a closet.
I had a similar problem when wired to my router. I'd refresh all the wifi and ethernet settings on the mac AND sexbox, then reconnect. If it still don't work, change either ipv4 or 6, or both to manual, and find the correct address from your ISP or router provider. Or phone them. Virgin media were able to help us with it.
lolwat, sorry, but that's not an option atm. I can't run a huge ethernet cord from my room to some maintenance room which I'm 90% sure I can't get in to.. [br][/br]Edited by merge: Hmm, I can try and refresh it and start over. Not quite sure if it's worth it, but I can try.. as far as calling them, it's my school's internet provider. Thanks though
For a while I had to connect to Xbox Live with my Mac. I had my laptop connected to my school's wifi, and an ethernet cable running from my Mac to my Xbox. The key to it was turning on internet sharing like this:
I've got the same thing going on: Think you can link me to the tutorial you used? An update: I've talked to Microsoft and they gave me this tutorial, which is for PCs... and doesn't really help me at all. They said to ask Apple for help, so I went to a Mac forum and asked there. Should probably have just called them up, but I doubt they'd help with Apple and Microsoft compatibility stuff There are two main problems: 1. The no internet when connected to both networks (Ethernet and Wifi) problem and 2. the incorrect DNS address problem.. Really wish there was an easy way to fix this. I'm gonna ask around and see if anyone else has gotten theres to work in my dorm. Pisses me off that PCs work within an hour, the only issue is my mac. Go figure, apple and microsoft compatibility is just awful sometimes.
Then cut out the ceiling in a closet or something. It's really not that difficult. Just be glad you don't have to splice ethernet cables.
If you want to find the DNS servers, go to System Preferences -> Network -> Wi Fi -> Advanced button -> DNS tab. The list on the left should contain your DNS servers. These might well be the same numbers you got in terminal, and if they don't work then you're probably screwed. EDIT: could you also do the same as above, but go to the TCP/IP tab instead of the DNS tab, then screengrab what's there please? Could you also describe what you have for each settings field on the Xbox side of things? Does your Ethernet setup look exactly like your screengrab? That should have more stuff as well, and I had trouble with the 10.0.0.1 setup so I switched to another IP.
I'll pm you as I don't really know how safe it is to display all that info... Another update: Spent about 4 hours today on it without much luck. I think the issue lies in the fact that my internet quits after connection to the two networks. I disabled my firewall, changed the service order of the networks, tried several other combinations for the DNS numbers. I tried asking for help in another thread, we'll see if they can help out Update: Pegasi fixed the internet stopping problem (turns out I had to change the IP and router numbers) but the DNS numbers still aren't working. My friend came over with a PC and got it working and I copied his DNS numbers (and tried other variations) and it still didn't work. Any thoughts anybody??
