So a few weeks ago my buddy Piano Frenzy came to me with a map idea. He happens to be my personal favorite montage/funtage maker (if you're into those, you need to check out his vids on YouTube. Think SaLaYa but better) and all around coolest Norwegian on XBL. He also happens to be an extremely capable forger. The idea was a fast paced, smaller FFA intended map inspired by the Halo 2 campaign mission "Outskirts". I loved the idea and he and I got to work balancing game play features and some aesthetics that will give any H2 fan a nice warm feeling of nostalgia. The center 2 story atrium, adjacent courtyard with "trees" as well as the apartments and garage across from it are directly from the campaign. We took some liberties adding the bases at each end as well as the grass courtyard and lift area with the windows to accommodate FFA matchmaking. We also added slight elevation changes and plenty of cover at street level to break up lines of sight without needlessly cluttering it. A major concern was having the 2 story atrium be too dominant a position like it was intended to be in the campaign. To combat this we added several ways to access the upper level and provided no cover. You get a great view of the map but can be seen and shot from almost anywhere. There are also multiple entrances to either base to eliminate camping and for that reason we also placed power weapons out in the middle. Here's a quick breakdown of the map and a video (thanks, Mantis ) featuring a walk through and a few minutes of me basically getting destroyed in customs. Enjoy! -Plays all FFA game types (slayer, regicide, ball and KOTH are extremely fun.) -Team spawns also placed for slayer variants, ball and KOTH. -2-10 players for both FFA or team games. WEAPONS -Sniper - 150 seconds -Rockets - 180 seconds -Scatter shot - 60 seconds -Saw - 60 seconds -Needler - 60 seconds -Damage boost - 120 seconds -Human turret - 30 seconds -Warthog (trait zone allows for use of the gunner only as it is intended more for aesthetics but enjoy the free kill if someone is dumb enough to get in it.) i have fond memories of this level, and it looks good. i also enjoy open levels so a big thumbs up from me will await release. im not sure about the trees, but i cant think of anything better!
This looks very well built! I could see some good Oddball games on here as well, so you should make it work for oddball.. please? haha Good work man I'll keep an eye out for the finished product.
This looks ridiculously good. Possibly the most appealing map I've seen yet in Halo 4. I can't comment on how it plays, but it does appear to lack dance floor on levels other than the bottom, which is more important in this game than it has been in past games. Good job, I'd like to take a look around this. Edit: Not sure about the trees. You may want to tamper with replacing those with another structure serving the same purpose instead of trying to make the trees.
Thanks for the input fellas. Fly, you better believe it plays oddball. First thing I did after placing the spawns was slap the oddball right in the middle. It's incredibly fun. Spawn, hammer forward on that left stick and find somebody to shoot...shouldn't take you long. As far as the "trees", I gave it about 15 minutes playing around with smaller rocks and small green base shields poking out everywhere before I drew the conclusion that there is no good substitute. I'll continue to keep trying to tweak it but game play wise, the stupid rocks serve the purpose perfectly. I hope to hear more feedback once you guys have run a few games. Thanks again!
This looks fantastic, GoF. I can definitely see where it is reminiscent of its H2 counterpart and I can safely say I could have never seen it becoming a playable map like this. I'd be interested in getting some game on it if at all possible.
It's in my FS if you want to grab it and give it a go. Otherwise I'll throw you an invite next time I've got a customs lobby going.
I cant speak to how it plays, but this LOOKS really good. You've given me a couple ideas just flying around in Forge. I especially like your use of satellite antennas and sniper nests for their aesthetics. The trees do look kinda wonky, but I'm sure in an actual match that will be the last thing on my mind. I've posted at length on the virtues of your Guardian remake, if this one is anywhere near as good as that, it's A+ work.
Nice map and really like your works. Keep it up GoF! And there´s actually Outskirts map made for H2V, which has all the custom weps also in there like flamethrower, silenced smgs etc. If anyone wants to try H2V before it gets taken out I can give out activation code for the multiplayer (have one unused code that can be used 5 times), message me on XBL! Maps looks great and everything so far, but I find it very odd that nobody seems to remember the map District here which was a section of the level Outskirts ported to Halo 2 Vista as a multiplayer map. It shipped with the game too so it wasn't a mod. Halo 2 Vista Map District Walkthrew - YouTube
I didn't even know what this level is called and I still recognized it. Amazing job. So this is why they call you god of forge!
Harbs, I didn't even know it existed. I had to Google it a few days ago after someone mentioned it on YouTube. Hopefully people don't think there's a correlation, we just went off the basic idea from the start of the campaign mission. PA1NTS, haha I know, pretty arrogant gamertag right? Thank you sincerely for the kind words. Means a lot coming from a highly esteemed forger such as yourself. Consider me humbled. Congrats on Scythe btw!
Instead of "trees", try adding "streetlights", as it's a neighborhood, it needs streetlights at night. Could try making something out of the scenery light we added in some corners of the map. Also, Hello ForgeHub! Thanks for all the feedback!
