A How-To Guide to prevent and fix the Red Rings Of Death commonly reffered to as RROD. Many gamers have faced the inevitable doom of the RROD. In this post you will find tips on how to fight the depressing circular ring. RROD happens when the Microsoft Stock X-Clamp breaks or gets to lose from the motherboard. Preventing the RROD: (Myths included) * Don't Stack: If you stack other consoles or DVD Players or anything of that matter it can block the Xbox 360's vents, causing it to overheat, this can cause your X-Clamp or Your Motherboard melt so be weary, it might not just be the cheap X-Clamp, and might cost you a pretty penny to play Halo 3 again. * Keep Away From Windows The Sun is not your friend in this case. Treat Your Xbox360 as one of those albino kids that are allergic to sunlight. Orelse your precious console will be burnt like toast. * Is it hot in here? If you know it is hot, try putting you Xbox 360 somewhere it is cool. Not a fridge or freezer either or this WILL kill your Xbox 360. * The old towel trick... This has not actually been proven to prevent it, it has been proven to delay the effects of RROD. But it is said that if you wrap your Xbox 360 with a damp towel it can prevent RROD. * Vertical Baaaad! Do not use the 360 vertically, as this blocks off a major air vent and makes the disc drive work harder to spin the disc. Do not pile games or controllers along side the 360, let it have its' own space and make sure there is plenty of room BEHIND the 360, that's where all the hot air gets blown out so don't put it up against the wall. Also, don't use the Nyko Intercooler, it's been known to contribute to causing RROD and Microsoft can tell if you used it and will not fix your 360 if it broke because of the Intercooler. How to fix the RROD: * Good ol' Microfsoft If you have a receipt...great, just sned it in and you should know the rest. Second you don't need a receipt, you just need to make sure your Gamertag is tied to your xbox 360 (with the Serial Number) Just log into xbox.com (with what ever passport you have) and tie it to your xbox then you are good to go. * DIY: X-Clamp A cheap, easy, inexpensive way to fix the RROD. The X-Clamp is the main thing that causes RROD and is easily replacable. There are many tutorials that can explain it better than me I'll try to embed some videos for your viewing please. This counts as a mod and if you replace the x-clamp and it breaks again and you want to send it in you will need to put in the original one and seal it tightly and hope they don't count it as modding your 360. Here are the offical home depot part numbers: Qty - 8 Machine Screw Pan - Phillips 5 x 10mm (DR# - 313) UPC - 030699 801282 Qty - 16 Flat Washer Nylon #10 (DR# - 610) UPC - 030699 869381 Qty - 16 Flat Washer Steel / ZINC Plated 5mm (DR# - 606) UPC - 030699 363087 I have successfully repaired 4 3RLOD's with these parts. Do NOT use the 'hex' head screws as a alternative, they are too large and cause your motherboard to bend when you screw it all back togeather. Note: The 'DR#' is the 'drawer number' and may not be the same at every home depot. I've visited 3 now with the same drawer numbers, but the upc and description is the best way to find it. Statistics: Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine: 925 consoles. Fixed the 3RLOD. Video still freezes occasionally: 23 consoles. Mixed results. Sometimes works with no 3RLOD: 8 consoles. Did not fix the 3RLOD: 86 consoles. Tutorials: RBJTech Tutorial VIDEO! Yea i have the RRoD.I did the towel trick using 3 towels it worked for about one day then stopped again.I'm not gunna risk it, opening my 360 because i already have the box microsoft gave me so im sending it in.Also you havent mentioned that if you do open your 360 microsoft won't accept it and send it back to you.
Yea I know but i could really care less because I have a bunch of them lying around. But I don't know what to do make a new account or add it to my existing account.Probally add it to my existing one because I never play on other accounts.
I'm sending my Xbox into Microsoft tomorrow to fix my RRoD, I saw some videos showing how to fix the RRoD by taking the X-Clamps off al together or something. Some other thigns to fix it also, but I think I'll leave opening my Xbox up untill the warrenty has run out, "professional" fix for no cost, so why not. Though when I was on the phone the guy I was talking to said to get a box from the post office and send it that way. I hear that MS sends a box to you to put the Xbox in it and send it back? Not for me apparently... Anyway, hopefully it wont take too long to get it back...
yes, us aussies get it real easy, took 6 days from the lights turning up to having a repaired one on my doorstep, great service here. but then again, i live half an hours drive from the repair centre, which may make a difference...
Yeah I live in Brisbane, I gotta send it to somewhere in Sydney... No idea where exactly, some place called "Chullora" But yeah, I'm hoping it doesn't take too long, I'm using my original (m***d) Xbox to stream videos 'n' such from my computer to the TV and it doesn't work well with HD content... Oh and my JSRF disc is too scratched to work so I can't even play that =[
