I recently figured out a way to make pieces not affected by lighting.

If you set the piece to Spawn at Start: No under the advanced settings and make the respawn time something like 10 sec, the lighting will not appear on the piece because it spawns after the map generates the lighting.

I imagine being able to control the lighting in this way will allow for some pretty cool aesthetics to be created.

This will only have 2 main effects aesthetics wise.

    1.) No shadows generated
2.) Lighted up object in shadow/dark room

The first ain't really a difference but the second one is but I can't think of a use for it because a lighted object surrounded by dark objects looks ugly. Unless you would want to delay spawn a whole room that is roofed so the room isn't so dark. Good attention to detail and thanks for sharing.

This isn't necessarily a new discovery among forgers, but it is an important one.
Aesthetically, it works great for enclosed maps, for both brightening up the indoors, and reducing framerate lag.

Now for the issues with it. If someone joins your game late, the lighting will load for them, and make everything as dark or laggy as it would be without the trick. And second, if you do this for flooring pieces, any weapons you have on the ground or piece not spawning right away the weapon will fall through the floor and not be there until it respawns later in the game.

It is however a useful trick I had to use on my Orbital remake. I reccommend it if it helps gameplay at all.

One workaround is to use two weapons - the one with the timer you'd like, not spawning at start, and a drop-spawned weapon set to never respawn and spawn at start.

This only works if you have enough vertical space and the weapon is accessible easily off-start (eg; snipe in base) to prevent despawning.

I wouldn't be worried about anything but power weapons as for spawning at start - everyone gets a good load of ammo at the beginning of the match.

Wouldn't this theoretically help fix the shadow glitch as well if the OLN is below the glitching number?

i'm using this trick some, or at least experimenting with it.

there are some pieces where it's extremely useful asthetically, and some others where it gets very tricky and may not be worth it in teh long run.

in my case, I do not really need to avoid using shadow budget, but wanted to intentionally light-up enclosed spaces.

I find it pretty stupid that we would even have to do this "trick" at all in forge.

Could someone give an example of this trick? Like pics or something.

I have a block hooked up to a station core, which doesn't cast a shadow at all, so if you want the added piece to look like it is part of the core, you use this trick on that block piece.

I also use some pieces as a sign or indicator. making that piece brighter by not calculating lighting for it is useful so it pops out of the wall more. For instance, i use a triangle on the wall to indication you can go "up" there (triangle pointing up of course)

I find it stupid that we have to do this too. I wish they had a way to turn of dynamic lighting, but for right now the only way I know is to do this. I'll try and get some pictures of it.

Also, I want to note that the pieces still do have "soft shadows" if you get close enough to the piece. The shadows disappear the farther you get away from the piece.

I hope this clears some things up.

have you noticed an advantage to making it spawn at 10 sec vs the 2 sec others have suggested?

is there any reason to have some spawn at different inervals so that the game isn't doing it all at once?

BTW, the choice of certain blocks you've used the trick on does still make the areas in your screenshots look more or less naturally lit and not gimmicky. Good Job. May I ask which pieces in your screenshots were flagged this way? (tricked out)

    1) I've only tried making it spawn at 10 sec so I don't know if there is a difference.

    2) I don't think you would need to make the pieces to spawn at different intervals because there are about 10 sec at the beginning of the match that you can't spawn (because you need to choose a loadout) so I don't think that it will make much of a difference.

    3) I'm glad that you think the blocks look somewhat naturally lit. All of the 4x4 tall and 4x4 blocks used as walls are flagged with the traits and the diamond in the middle.
