First off, I wasn't a huge forgehub-er during Reach so pardon my etiquette if I am improper. I am more or less done with a 1v1 map that I have used to test out the Halo 4 forge. I'm going to go wild using spawn areas and the like so we can gain a better understanding of the system if there have been any changes. If anyone knows of any huge changes, please let me know. The other thought I had was about the Ordinance drops. I have noticed that when an item spawns a waypoint appears above it. Do we think this will be good for gameplay? I can remember that while playing competitive games, I would remember the times when power weapons would spawn and where they were located. But now, if an ordinance drop is used, the players are alerted when a weapon spawns. Do we think this gives less of an advantage to superior players? Or do we think it allows for greater understanding of custom maps? I think that ordinance drops should be used on custom maps, where players are less likely to know the map inside-and-out, but should be left out of more commonly played maps, such as those in matchmaking. I will be using plenty of spawn zones in this map I am making and I will be using ordinance drops as well. We will see how this plays out, I think both will be for the better.
How is having them show up a *bad* thing? It's almost equivalent to saying "we need this arbitrary system in place because competitive." It's less of a hassle on casual players or newcomers, and competitive players can still have timers to figure out exactly when items respawn and where. It literally just makes learning the map easier.
I never said it was a *bad* thing. I just said that it would give better players less of an advantage if players are notified when power weapons spawn. I will be putting this in my map to see how things play out. I think that on highly competitive maps, ie. mlg and slayer pro, should not have ordinance drops, rather, they should have regular weapons spawns like the other Halo games to allow for better players to show why they are better.
someone correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe we can still place weapons in forge the old way also, if we do not want to use the ordnance system.
I have not tried to, but yes I believe can. I just think that on more competitive maps weapons should be placed regularly, not in ordinance drops.
I personally highly dislike the ordnance system. It reduces the skill gap on the map and it alerts people when a person from the opposing team has picked up an ordnance weapon. This is especially bad when the ordnance is in a relatively enclosed area.
I personally don't mind it. A careful mix of ordinance and normally placed weapons can make an Intresting map.
I was told by FyreWulff that the spawning for H4 is based upon Reach, but that the weights have been adjusted. In Reach the Respawn Zone was so strong that it would force a player to spawn in that zone even with an enemy standing next to the spawn point. In H4, this is no longer the case. You can be a significant distance from a spawn point and your enemy proximity would out weigh the Respawn Zone. In looking at the H4 maps and the new game types, it is becoming clear why they did this. But the bottom line is that you cannot guarantee a player will not spawn next to an enemy flag. It can be remote by design, but there are no guarantees. So if you create a CTF game, you want to use team assigned points in close proximity to their flags, eliminating any chance of any enemy from spawning near the flag. I am going to write up some stuff on this later and I will present a link to my blog at that time. As for using plenty of spawn zones, I don't understand why you would. Take a look at the H4 maps that came with the game and look how they used them.
