We all go through the stages of thinking of a map before creating it. One of the ways to brain storm ideas is to draw it on paper. Before spending the time to build the entire map, sketching helps to get an idea of how it will be made and how it will look. So feel free to post your sketches, and give feedback to others who have posted their own.

To be clear and get the point of your map across, you should use symbols or color key so the member giving critique will understand.

Here is an example of a sketch

Auburn's sketch of a figure 8 map he hopes to build

and heres one of mine (not so good haha)

    Ahem.

This thread has no effort put into it! You should have made a clear description of what the purpose of this thread is. Oh well, if it fails, I'll create another. But now that you are the original poster, you will have the responsibility of leaving helpful feedback. Good luck!

A smart thing to do is start by posting your recent drawings.

Erm, so is this open for anybody to give feedback? If so, I will try to write some feedback for others' designs. I've already got some great suggestions from people on this one, but I will gladly take any more. Sorry, this is the only screenshot I have currently, but there are connections on the bottom floor.

I intended for the flow to be in the shape of an eight, forcing players to transition to lower ground if they continue with it or wish to gain power weapons.

EDIT: Maybe you could throw some tutorials in the OP, like Godly Perfection's stuff.

    Lol.

Why don't we just make it to where anyone can give feedback on anyone's sketches, xzamplez? That's what I thought the original plan was anyway, doesn't matter who started the thread.

Also though DC, if you do want this thread to be taken seriously, then you should clean up the OP a little bit. Also the title, no apostrophe in "sketches."

I'm glad someone made this though. I may throw mine up here in a bit

I like it auburn, i feel like because of the shape, players wont tend to only stay in one part of the map, but if you could color code the levels it would give me a better visual, also you should add more ways to get across the map than that one hallway, but overall id love to see it come to life.

i drew this up earlier today and worked on it a little

as a 1v1 or 2v2 map. The idea behind it is the middle is all at level 1, the sides are gradually raised from 1 to 2, in opposite ways on either side, and there are hallways on the out edges of each side that are at corresponding angles, then, where the map ends on both sides, there is a circle platform that has a trap hole that brings you to level -1 (small hallway under map, which will have grav lifts up to level 1

Very confusing to build lmao but id like to know what you guys think if you understand what i just said

It matters who started the thread, if the activity is low. As the thread creator, it is his responsibility to ensure that the thread prospers. Hopefully he won't have to do that, because we have three people who are willing to stay active on it (assuming you would).

DC, that should be your primary sketch to plan the connections, lines of sight, and power distribution. But if you are going to post it in this thread, other members need to be able to understand what exactly you are going for. I would recommend getting graph paper, and using each square as a 2x2 block measurement. So hopefully, you will redraw that, so I can leave feedback on it.

@Shik: I normally wouldn't care, but we are trying to start a serious thread you douchebag.

I really need to download and learn sketchup. It would be a nice way to pass the time between classes for when school comes around.

Don't worry, there are two extra hard route connections on the bottom floor of each area, as well as a teleporter. Thanks for the feedback.

As for yours, I can't quite get a grasp on it. Are there two overlapping floors in the center? Also, I'm not too fond of the trap door idea. Sorry, I'll rewrite that if you can better illustrate the design.

Sketchup isn't hard to use. Once you have created ramps, blocks, and walls with accurate scaling, it's basically forge but faster.

Or you can use graph paper and draw your maps!

Alright this isnt to great but this will give you an idea of what i meant by the different levels, and the green on the north and south circles is the trap door. Its not really a trap door but a hole that goes to level 0, which is a small rock cave under the map where ill put a power weapon, or something that makes it worth something

I just made this quick in photoshop so sorry if i can't give you a good image haha

edit: just a fyi, this is a 1v1 map so its reasonably small, also incase you didnt know, the smudge of red and blue represent a transition between levels

Hey guys... I really like this idea. I'll be watching the thread and posting too.

DC, what do the = and + sins on the outside of the map drawing mean? and the black dots? Maybe we should add legends to our sketches or create some kind of standardized pictures for basic things? - ex. ramps, tac jumps, doors, lifts, teles

Thank you haha, but i mean to say that the + and = meant ramps to higher level or bridge that stayed on same level

But i think i'll edit the OP alittle to make this more formal and @ auburn im gunna post your sketch in the OP because a nice and simple and people will get the idea of the thread

    edit: no spam

this is suppose to be a symmetrical 4v4 map that focuses more on fighting on a higher level and using the higher level more than the lower level, as it gives advantage

Are there any connections from green to blue? I like it, you have a nice rvr factor going with the center platform. There are a couple of immediate problems though.

    • There are only two real levels of elevation, so the each floor is flat all the way across. Some more height variance would spice things up and possibly block the lines of sight.

    • The map is very open and lacks any structure leading to cross-map lines of sight. Players have no real chance to push up and the LoS would probably result in constant standoffs. Both of those would lead to little movement and slow gameplay. An example of a solution would be to fill in those smaller green squares with walls, that's just a halfass suggestion though.

    • The upper level is basically made up of an exstension of bridges, so there is not any real dance floor. The skinny walkways combined with the lack of structure would make players reluctant to travel on them. It may need more tweaks, but I think you should work on those three problems a bit first.

Would you guys be able to critique a sketch of a BTB map? I don't know if anyone active in this is experienced with BTB.

Thank you for the good critique haha, and yea the connection from green to blue would be ramps and such, and i agree about the bridges, hopefully i can actually put this into forge, im just not good with asyms

i play online if thats what you mean haha, but im sure many people can judge a BTB sketch

Just because he went ahead with it instead of waiting for unnecessary permission doesn't preclude you from leaving helpful feedback.

Just because we haven't posted doesn't mean we're not watching ;)

That sounded really stalkerish (is that a word?) :p

Anyway, I'll post here once I can figure out how to draw straight lines in paint (don't hold your breath)

    Option 1: Scanner
Option 2: Use a ruler with your mouse/trackpad
Option 3: Get something better than paint

@option1: don't have one :( Black and white printer FTW

@2 - wait.. my mouse is roundish... or is that not what you mean?

    @3 any ideas? I'm open

EDIT: I tried making an overview in paint. IT WON'T WORK. it's too vertical :(

EDIT 2: I'll use graph paper and maybe take a picture of it with my camera and upload?
