Hey there. I've been around since the very beginning, and over time a couple of things have arisen that have always perked my interest, and I wanted a little more info and to get some opinions on them. Firstly is the common theme of sideways flags. You know the ones I mean, the ones that come out of walls. These seem to be quite popular, and on more than one thread I've seen things like "Sideways flags are always a bonus" and "Bonus points for side-on flags". I was just wondering what it is about them that makes them so special. I personally have always found them to look quite cheesy, although admittedly they don't look "bad". So what do you guys think of them? Have I just hapenned to look at threads with side-flag aficionados? Or are they really awesome and I'm just missing something? The second thing, one that personally bugs me, is the theme of interlocking. I've seen a huge number of threads where people simply say "Needs more interlocking" or "Would be good if it had interlocking". I understand that some maps should be interlocked, especially because sometimes it's vital to actual gameplay. But a number of times where I've seen this comment, I've played the map, and it's worked absolutely fine. So I wanted to ask, why is it that now interlocking is necessary for something to be good? If a map works fine without interlocking, what difference is it going to make except one of aesthetics? That's not to say that interlocking for aesthetic reasons is pointless, merely that if a person makes a map and either does not know how to, or chooses not to use interlocking, and the map works absolutely fine without (no problems that could be "fixed" via interlocking), why is it deemed worthless by many? Same as above, I just wanted a little more info and opinion on the topic, so again, what do you think?
The thing is, almost every single featured map on foundry is interlocked, and they all look pretty darn pretty. So, in order for a map to be a spitting image of a featured map, people think they should be interlocked. It shows that you care enough to go the extra nine yards. If there were two of the exact same map, one interlocked, and one not, which one would you prefer?
Bonus points for a sideways...no, upside-down flag interlocked into an item merged into the crane on foundry. And there had better be mancannons. lots and lots of mancannons. I want that map.
Firstly, I agree sideways flags aren't good. I wouldn't use them in a map but others do so some people must think they're awesome. The interlocking point is posted every week. Search interlocking and you will find probably 10+ threads exactly the same lol. Heres what i've said in the past: Also welcome to forge hub.
Somewhat undeveloped and incoherent post FTW! Wow. Ta, didn't really think about it that way. I guess different people look at things in different ways. I guess I asked cause I always worry that my maps wouldn't be counted as good, just because they don't contain it. Truth be told, I don't use Foundry anyway, because lets be honest, it's ugly. Unfortunately, so are most forge items in other maps (Except in Ghost Town, of course). Either way, I was just thinking that a map should be judged on playability, not whatever else. But Mealon's right, if I were to choose between two similar maps, I'd choose the prettiest. Cheers folks
Interlocking just generally makes it look better than there were to be without interlocking, you can also create any shape you want, or of any size (within reason relative to the map size).
