Ive been at this tech camp lately and weve been using udk, and my project is to create a map suitable for deathmatch, so i decided to remake my forge map: Crosswalk Im really liking the way its been turning out, and it is very proportional to the original. But its a work in progress and Ive decided to change some things up and add a little more to the map. My instructer is a guy who's previously worked on crysis and several other games, and is now applying for blizzard, so Im doing my best to impress I dont have a whole lotta time to get this done, but ill supply the pics:
Holy **** this is cool, I've been wanting to get a PC for the longest time to run UDK. Can you place the original forge map photos underneath these to help me get a grip on what I'm looking at? Oh, and what state is this tech camp in?
What do you use to learn udk? I've considered starting to use it just for fun but can't find anything good that explains the basic stuff.
This. I want to get into it by the time UDK4 releases. By the way, you can totally tell Forge influenced your creation. Not a bad thing, just interesting.
Thenewboston has a pretty good tutorial series on how to use some features. EDIT: link This looks fantastic and like Sarge said, you can definitely tell it's forge inspired. I love the feel of it all though and the very gloomy feel.
A lot of details I would be arms and legs against in forge actually look alright here. Tasteful, in fact. Honestly, the atmosphere remainds me a good deal of a Gears level. Udk looks interesting; I wish I could find the motivation to learn it. :/
I just dont have the time nor patience now to learn UDK, but this is gorgeous. Like Sarge and Mingo said, it looks both like a forge map and gears map in some comined way. The statue, while I'm not sure if I like how it is presented, is a nice touch too. However I would have liked to see more color, it's all pretty darn brown. Though it's not grey so that's nice =P
Damn, why is everyone else's first UDK map so much more detailed than mine? Ah well, this does look very nice. Did you model any pieces/ make any materials yourself or is it all pre-used UDK parts?
Yea they were pre-made. I didnt have a whole lotta time to do this so I pretty much forged it XD I also had to decrease the lights a little because I had some culling problems.
Yeah, I've been doing the same, though I switched to Unity 3D because UDK doesn't have Mac Support. I'm hoping I can get good enough soon with both Unity and a modeling program to make something less sloppy than my last project (posted a few pages back.)
What exactly is UDK? A 3D Modelling program obviously but what does it stand for? Looks to me like a better version of forge. And ya this map is dope. It looks like it could be a 1v1 on gears of war.
Unreal Development Kit. The dev kit used by Epic Games to make Gears of War and just about every other developer to make their games. The similarities between UDK and Forge stop at being able to position pre-fab objects. The idea is that you can make a forge in UDK or whatever other world you want. To actually make a game using it some code knowledge is required however.
Just one thing Pac missed: UDK is not a modeling program. A modeling program lets you mold and create specific objects to be used in a game, while UDK is where you bring together all of your custom models, materials, textures, etc... to make the final creation. UDK has a lot of models already in it for experimentation, but you can download them from others or make our own as well. Basically, UDK is a game engine with very few specifications, and you can build around it to make something like it or strip it back more to move away from it's style of gameplay (which is FPS my default.)
...thought I covered that in my "similarities end" statement but yours was more specific. Anyway, the actual modeling programs used by developers usually are; Maya, Studio 3D Max, Cinema 4D, or Blender. There are others but those are the most common in-industry.
Wow How you make that ? I mean it's amazing ! I can see you made Blue Base , Red Base , Blue Tunnel and a bit of the SDniper Tower . Keep On Working Austin !
I have no idea what this was made in but it looks cool, interesting to see you forging outside of Halo.
