Hey guys, or anyone who can help, My father in law bought pro tools mp9, to record music that he has written. I am laying down bass and lead guitar tracks for him. The problem is that he is constantly having trouble with playback. He constantly gets a loud static, white noise during playback & recording. It's extremely frustrating trying to record this way. It sometimes makes the noise for hours and then goes quiet for 15 minutes then static again. We have googled & YouTubed everything we can think of to no success. Does anyone here know about protools? More specifically about this sertain problem? He thinks it's the interface, but we aren't sure. He took the interface to some guy with a similar setup & hooked it up there to have a similar static problem but it wasn't near as bad as what we have on our system. We desperately want help so if anyone can help it would be great. I know he has protools mp9 hooked up to a dell desktop computer. He bought the dell rebuilt and got it specifically for recording only. There aren't any other programs on it. We have heard we need an external hard drive but this doesn't sound like a memory problem. We're stumped. Anyone?
When I bought an MBox, I had this problem. I wasn't that familiar with Pro Tools and decided to return it for a different interface. It seems to be a pretty common problem with them. If you can still return it, I would suggest doing so and finding something without as many problems. From what I've read though, shutting down (not restarting), waiting 30 seconds and powering back up may work. No promises but that's the best advice I could give you. I hate the whole M-Box series. It can be good but it seems like such a hassle.
I think its more likely to be the interface tbh. Which one are you using? Also is it FireWire or USB? As for it happening on the other guys setup but not as bad, a number of factors can affect the presence and level of white noise. Stuff like the mics and cables you use, or how close your mics etc are to other electrical equipment, particularly the computer and screen themselves. If you have any alternative mics and cables which you could try then that could help isolate the problem, and definitely try recording with the mics placed as far away from the computer as possible.
Maybe try cleaning out all the AUX ports and things where sound cables are connected, they're always likely to cause some sort of buzzing sounds. Just like when you touch the connector with your hand.
I agree. When I had this problem, it happened with EVERY guitar, mic, cable, etc. It seemed like there was no solution, so I returned it.I bought this Focusrite 6 USB and I love it. It doesn't come with Pro Tools though unfortunately even though it's advertised as Pro Tools ready. (It does come with Ableton Live Lite however, which I'm used to anyways.)
Well, it is USB, but it shouldn't be mics or cables. See, it's really only a playback issue. I recorded my bass directly from the line out on my peavey amp head. I can record while the white noise is blarring and the white noise doesn't record. When static finally stops I can go back and listen to what I recorded and it's clear. It just sucks because I couldn't hear what I was playing when recording it due to the noise. Once the static sound starts, we have to sit & wait for it to stop before we can listen. We have tried to shutdown and reboot, that doesn't work. I wouldn't think it's cables & mics because we used different cables with different instruments & it even happens when building drum beats on the built in drum machine. It's extremely annoying though cuz sometimes it gives us huge windows without the noise and then sometimes it's never Ending static. Btw, the interface is called " M Audio Mobile pre" and is a USB.
