Awesome thread for finding some new tunes to listen to. I don't get much exposure to new music, so its cool to see what other people are listening to.
After a week and a half of cutting my initial list of 180 songs down, I finally arrived at my top ten. All the "hipsters" here will probably give me **** for knowing every single artist here, but whatever. In order by artist, because I couldn't rank them against each other. Knights of Shame - AWOLNATION AWOLNATION - Knights of Shame (Audio) - YouTube When Kuroda first showed me AWOLNATION, I thought this was their worst song by a mile. After listening to the song a few more times, I realized how ****ing brilliant it really is. There are so many different elements to the song and each one of them caters to a different music-appreciating part of me. The Scientist - Coldplay Coldplay - The Scientist - YouTube One of the two songs on this list that appeals emotionally to me. This song single-handedly helped me get over a relationship. To me, the lyrics perfectly fit my situation at the time and the whole song embodies what I love about Coldplay. Strobe - Deadmau5 deadmau5 - Strobe - YouTube Strobe shows how much of a genius Deadmau5 is. It is the most perfect house song and should never be touched by an remixers. Simply great. Carry On - Fun. Fun.: Carry On (Audio) - YouTube I just recently discovered Fun. but this song quickly rose to become one of my favorites. An absolutely perfect song for when you're feeling a little down-in-the-dumps, Carry On is also just really damn catchy. Room For Happiness (ICE Mix) [feat. Skylar Grey] - Kaskade Kaskade feat. Skylar Grey - Room For Happiness (Kaskade's ICE Mix) (Official Video) - YouTube Skylar Grey's vocals captivate me in this song. They were obviously the focus in this mix (which is 100 times better than the original), and they really do stand out against a simple yet solemn instrumental. The music video for this mix is amazing as well. In Pieces - Linkin Park Linkin Park- In Pieces [With Lyrics] - YouTube If I was to rank these, In Pieces would be a strong contender for the #1 spot. It was my undisputed favorite song for a while until I started to expand my horizons. It's definitely one of the lesser known Linkin Park songs because it's so different than most of their songs. It's brilliant though, and the solo is wonderful. Waiting For The End - Linkin Park Waiting for the End (Official HD) - YouTube Waiting For The End is the other song on this list that emotionally appeals to me. I wouldn't say it helped me get over a relationship, but it certainly helped me sort out my thoughts and feelings about the relationship. Butterflies and Hurricanes - Muse Muse - Butterflies and Hurricanes (Video) - YouTube Anyone who knows me knows that Muse is my undisputed favorite band, so as you can imagine, simply preventing my entire top ten consist of Muse was a task in and of itself. I think Butterflies and Hurricanes best sums up what I love about Muse: Matt Bellamy's vocals, the dark feel to their songs, brilliant heavy guitar riffs, and elements of classical music with piano and strings. United States of Eurasia - Muse Muse United States of Eurasia - YouTube This song again embodies everything I love about Muse, while also bringing my academic interests into play. The concept of the song, depicted rather clearly by the title of the song, really caters to my interests in international relations. Also, the musical elements of this song are nothing short of stunning. Hurricane (feat. Kanye West) - 30 Seconds To Mars 30 Seconds to Mars- Hurricane (This is War 2009)(HQ W/ Lyrics) - YouTube I don't really know what to say about this song. Some people say that Kanye West ruins this version, but I think his part is perfectly played and really adds a whole new dimension to the song that really pushes it to be a standout song. Jared Leto's vocals are amazing in this as well.
Okay, I'm going to do this (but with no particular order), but I couldn't narrow it down to 10, so I've got a top 11? Also, I've found many a song through this thread. K, These are just a few of what I really enjoy, there are more. Again, no particular order: Edit: I've been compiling for.. (looks at clock) ..a while.. and am getting a bit tired, so these descriptions are going to be brief.. Edit 2: Sry for all the lag, there are a lot of youtube videos in this thread. Citizen - Broken Bells This one resonates a sort of dark bliss. Too difficult to explain haha Broken Bells - Citizen - YouTube Lovers in Japan/Reign of Love - Coldplay Helps me reflect on my time abroad, past friendships, etc. Love the piano. To me, the title alone explains the song quite well. Coldplay - Lovers In Japan / Reign Of Love - YouTube Bixby Canyon Bridge - Death Cab for Cutie Really like the intensity this group often conveys. I'll often play this loudly.. Death Cab For Cutie - Bixby Canyon Bridge - YouTube Such Great Heights (cover) - Iron & Wine I first heard the original by the Postal Service from my brother. Then I heard this cover and I thought it captured the development of my life at that particular moment and has stuck ever since. It's also somewhat haunting/leering as it'll sometimes remind me of my ex as I used to listen to the original by the postal service with her. It's a developing/widening concept that's changed over the years. It's bittersweet and.. churning. I'll avoid it usually, but it's still a pretty important song to me Iron And Wine - Such Great Heights - YouTube Bloodbuzz Ohio - The National Really, really enjoy the piano and drum combination. The music video serves it well imo. The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio - YouTube Lisztomania - Phoenix Great climax (get yo' head outta the gutter). The end bit combination of vocals and instrumentals is fantastic. Phoenix- Lisztomania - YouTube Walking Disaster - Sum 41 Represents the "whiny teen" side o' me... which everyone has to some degree i believe. Enjoy the opening, but the reversal at the end makes my day. Sum 41 - Walking Disaster - YouTube Honky Tonk Woman - The Rolling Stones Feel-good awesohmeness. Just can't get over it.. it's never ending, but in a fantastic way. Love the guitar.. it's overall pretty characteristic of the rolling stones. Rolling Stones Honky tonk woman lyric - YouTube Hand Covers Bruise - Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross Could be that I first heard this in the Social Network... which I really like... but this song sends shivers down me spine. To me, it doesn't get much more "raw" than this. Fun fact: I first hated this song, and grew to love it quite a bit. Hand Covers Bruise (HD) - From the Soundtrack to "The Social Network" - YouTube Take a Minute - K'naan Pretty inspiring. There's that piano again hah. I enjoy the lyrics K'NAAN - Take a Minute (Subtitulada) - YouTube Logical Song - Supertramp One of my dad's favorite songs. I'll often try to listen to this in the context of my dad's life. I quite like the lyrics. Oh, and dat sax. (Doesn't appear to be on youtube, but I'm sure most have heard of it) And there we go, the end

You don't say... Well, I suppose I'll put my own on here. No order, just as I think of them. I just wish I could put in more than 10! The Airborne Toxic Event: Papillon Papillon is a wonderful song for myself, about the lost feeling the singer had at this point in his life. The whole album refelcts his troubles, and puts them in a bittersweet melody. the Airborne Toxic Event: Papillon (Acoustic Series, Week 2) - YouTube The Airborne Toxic Event: All I Ever Wanted I love this song, the everything just speaks to me. I cannot pinpoint why, but I am attached to it. All I Ever Wanted (Bombastic Video) - YouTube The Airborne Toxic Event: All At Once I really love this group. Basically this song is about how we are born, live, and die so quickly. A topic I think on quite a bit. Now in song form! (If I had room for more than ten I would have put down all of their songs) The Airborne Toxic Event - All At Once (Bombastic Video) - YouTube The Black Keys: Nova Baby This just sounds great. The Black Keys - Nova Baby - YouTube The Arctic Monkeys: I Bet That You Look Good On the Dance Floor This sounds slightly better than great. Arctic Monkeys-Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor (clear) - YouTube Boston: Peace of Mind I love Boston, and was surprised so little older music made it here. I do love the Beatles, Kansas, and so on, I just don't love them as much I suppose. Boston-Peace of Mind - YouTube Fences: Girls With Accents A beautiful ballad about nothing working out right and all because the person having it all messed up caused it to go wrong. (explicit) GIRLS WITH ACCENTS (OFFICIAL VIDEO) - YouTube Tinariwen: Tenere Taqqim Tossam All about how these men from Mali have journeyed the world and love their home better. Pretty darn nice as far as I am concerned, and I have had many hillarious attempts at singing along. Tinariwen - TENERE TAQQIM TOSSAM - YouTube Streetlight Manifesto: Would You Be Impressed? I don't have a list of my favorite songs all in order, but my favorite song has to be....drum roll.... Stairway to Heaven - Led Zepplin Ya, maybe it's an old song, but it's so awesome. It isn't like other songs. I kindda tells a story at the begining, just like medival music, but then it inclines into a rock song. I do like other songs, but I don't have a list. This song is my favorite and if you haven't heard it before I suggest you do.
