So we don't have to use 7 objects we can use...say 5...just to save on budget and stuff?

Maximum is seven, minimum is zero. So by all means, use less than seven object types if you like. My guess would be that plenty of maps won't even bother with the building or natural categories.

I've attempted a map for this, but I honestly don't think it's going to eventuate. Don't have much time to get it all done, and probably won't be able to test it at all. Which sucks, but at least I'll be able to help test the others, if need be. Anyone from TCOJ can add me of PM me or whatever if you require my services. ;)

You may get lucky - if we don't get enough submissions by the deadline, we're going to extend it a week. That's not written in stone, it just depends how many we get by the cutoff point. We'd rather put it off another week than not have enough entries. But then again, don't count on it - I imagine a lot of people are probably waiting til the last minute to submit (well, hopefully anyway!).

Is the coloussum out of bounds? Made my start last night using difficult pieces... But if coloussum is out of bounds I may have to rethink

I just noticed 10 for originality...I would reconsider that, because it's probably the hardest thing to attain while designing a map.

That's specifically why we're giving some points for it. It's still the least weighted part of the score. I doubt highly that anyone will get 10 points for that and a near-perfect score everywhere else (though if they do, they're walking away with this contest!). But it's a nice bonus for choosing to do something a little different than the standard forge palette (which at this point is very standardized: brace large, 2x4 block, coliseum wall or window, 2x2 ramp or ramp XL, 4x4 corner, etc.).

Ultimately what I envision is that nobody will get a "perfect" score or anything close to it, because it's too hard to do both weird object selection and good map building. But this isn't a review, it's a contest - the score you get only determines how well you place relative to other entries. Thus with the most weight going to other categories, doing well there is more likely to win than choosing strange pieces to build with. (But who knows for sure!)

EDIT - Whoops, I just realized you said "originality" and not "degree of difficulty." Well the same basic thing applies. It's part of your overall score, but it's one of the least important ones. It's hard to make a map that is both really solid/fun and original, but hopefully you'll be encouraged to try.

Also as a general reminder: the official deadline for submissions is supposed to be today. So far we have just a few entries and we really need more, so if we don't get a lot of last-minute entries today, it will be extended by possibly a week (at the most).

Used just the brace large of that list. Feeling badass. :D

Also, thank you Nutduster for this challenge- this is why I love forging.

Did in the end decide to send in my map, although it didn't turn out to be quite how I wanted it and I did not have an opportunity to play test it (even though I did finish it more than a week ago). But it's quite a different map than most in there, so I just wanted to share it. Maybe it will turn out to be better than I fear right now and be fun to play.

Bugger I missed the deadline. I've got a mountain of uni work so I couldn't finish the map in time. Just the spawns...XD

No worries Katanga. We did get a lot of last-minute maps but I'd like to get more, so I am going to extend the deadline just a bit. Check the submission thread for details (translation: I haven't decided yet exactly what the new deadline is).

I was pretty clear in referring to the submission thread, where the new deadline was posted about 5 or 10 minutes after my comment above. Anyway, the deadline has been moved back to Saturday, March 3, midnight-ish. Maps will now be downloaded by me on Sunday and we commence testing and judging them next week. I still hope to announce contest winners by the end of March if possible.

    EDIT:

The submission period is now ended - thanks to all entrants for participating! I will be downloading all maps and checking them for eligibility today, and the playing and judging begins this week.

Please do not change your maps, remove the existing file that is in your fileshare and linked in the submission thread, or edit your post in that thread any further. Your maps will be downloaded shortly and we may need to re-download them (for the various judges to have copies), and I need to be sure we all have the same exact map. Ideally you should leave your map in your fileshare until winners of the contest are announced.

I do indeed. So far we have tested 5 of the 16 submitted maps. Our next lobby is scheduled for Monday evening, and I'm going to try like hell to run all the remaining entries, though we may come up short - 11 is a lot for one evening when you're playing them all twice. So the testing portion may be done in less than a week, or perhaps in a couple of weeks at the outside.

After that, I'm just waiting on the judges to all submit their scores back to me. I'm pretty quick with this stuff, they are a bit less so. :) Expect announcements regarding the winners to made very near March 31st, earlier if possible (but not likely).
