I've been working on recreating the forge world objects in Google Sketchup. I realize someone already made them way back when, but that was done prior to the game actually coming out (I think...) and many of the objects are not to scale with each other. This has been a daunting task and my work is not complete. I still have a few buildings to make and a couple of objects in the platform section. Ultimately I would love to include the natural pieces as well, but that seems an extremely difficult task if you've ever worked with Sketchup. The buildings are the most tedious to make so far and before I continue the work, I was wondering if anyone would even be interested in utilizing this at all. I personally like to layout my maps before I build them. I would personally use the objects I've made so far just by myself, but if others want to use this, then I can see them wanting all the objects. I don't use the current version that is out there because many of the pieces are not accurate. Whoever made them did a great job for an initial version so that we could design before the game ever came out. But many objects needed work. I started from scratch and used my own work. I did not alter the original pieces just to call it my own. I made the 1x1 Block with the dimensions of 1 meter x 1 meter x 1 meter and just made everything to scale with that. I'd say the objects are 98% accurate with maybe a few discrepencies here and there because I made them all from screenshots and there is bound to be imperfections. This is what I've completed so far. Any comments or criticisms or thoughts would be appreciated.
Looks great, although I dislike Sketchup because it seems difficult to use, Idk maybe cause I'm an edit coordinate addict.
It took me a while to get the hang of it. Sketchup is definitely difficult to use at first. So this is really only for people that know it well enough to use it. I usually draw out my ideas anyways. I'm definitely an "edit coordinate" addict as well. Unfortunately everything doesn't always line up perfectly and objects shift...wish someone would fix that.
The Advanced Forge Sketchup (by Mick Raider I think?) that you are talking about Berb is the one that came out before the game. It has a lot of flaws due to the fact that by their own admission they had to give their best guess on some things. I took screenshots of the objects and got fairly accurate measurements of the objects. Like I said, its not perfect, but its more accurate because it is being made after the game has been out. The original was very good considering the estimations having to be done. But this is definitely more like the real thing.
Looks useful, though how easy would phasing be? Sketchup was a good idea but the objects being hollow causes a lot of problems. All they needed to do really was imitate Autodesk SolidWorks. I've used that program to design a few smaller maps and it's easier than Sketchup (though quite expensive.)
Well halo Reaches forge objects are hollow aswell, its just seemingly solid. but they're hollow. Edit: **** JUST GOT 70 POSTS :'(
The sketchup stuff was made so people could design maps before the game was released. With the ease of forging now that phasing has been implemented sketchup designs are unnecessary.
I don't find sketch up to be worth while anymore. Reach forge is just as easy if not easier then sketch up pieces like these plus there is terrain and natural pieces. Either way good job but I'm not sure anyone will use this unless their xbox is broken.
I agree that it isn't worth it to use sketchup when you can just use the forge. However there are many slow days at work where I can mess around for a little bit working on maps, and this is helpful to pass the time. Most of the time I carry around a piece of paper in my pocket and a pencil so I can jot down ideas as they come. This was really just something I've been wanting to do and have had the time.
This is really nice honestly, sketch up has needed a new forge world component collection for a while now, the other one has lots of issues and sometimes wont load up correctly or at all. I myself have to use the oldest version of the components because I upgraded my sketch up to 8.0 :/ so I've been looking for other components for a while. So I for one am happy someone took the time out to work on these they look very accurate and really detailed, I like using sketch up when I have time to sit down and plan out my designs. Its much easier to look at a sketched up design and just put it together all at once when your finished laying it all out, than it is to do the guess work in forge the whole project. Sketch up allows you to show others what you really expect out of the project before hand and get opinions on the design itself without all the added aesthetics, which can be pretty great at times. So thank you
Great job. Sketchup is a great tool for desinging maps. I agree that its easier these days just to forge ideas in game rather than use Sketch but its still a handy thing to have. Especially if you are currently without xbox for whatever reason, its nice being able to design your maps in preparation for getting your xbox back from repair or something. On a side note, the biggest thing missing from the world of sketchup right now is a forgeworld canvas to work on. Its probably impossible to make accurately but it would be soooo helpful to have.
