Competitive maps, racing maps, minigames, etc are all very fun, but I believe that the hardest thing to find is a good infection map. I have searched my entire halo career for good infection maps and have found very few. That is why I think some great infection maps should be featured so it makes them stand out and people see how great infection can be instead of thinking it as a bad gametype in general. Also I don't want those bogus infection maps that don't capture the true essence of infection. True infection maps should always be non linear, not a mini game, require teamwork, etc. I have my theories on why infection maps are usually not featured. Perhaps there are just too many bad infection maps to sift through to get to the good ones. Perhaps no one actually wants to put a lot of effort into creating an incredible infection map. Maybe it's too hard to balance infection maps correctly (BTW, I hate timed events for real infection, don't know why). Those are the reasons I have come up with. Give me some of your thoughts on the subject
It seems that more people on this site are interested in competitive maps that infection ones. For this reason, there are very few infection maps featured. However, we did have an infection contest recently. The only maps I have played from that thread are Haunted Coast and Parallex, but I would imagine that the others are good also. Parallex is probably my favorite infection map in reach, so I'd advise checking that out. also, Of Legions is an infection map that has been featured (again, I haven't played it, but I've heard good things about it from people who have).
ForgeHub can't just feature every map. Maps get featured either by: a) it winning a contest b) it getting passed through a vote in the Hub Pub (the staff and loyal forum) If the maps aren't winning contest, nor do they please the coloured ranks, they won't be featured. Unfortunately friend, we can't do a thing about that. Those 'bogus' infection maps are actually pretty awesome. Possibly Manifest, the best infection map ever made, was linear. The fact is that this 'true infection' concept you believe in is bullshit, and that 'true infection' lies in how the forger portrays the three themes of infection: fear, chaos, and despair No, there is no real reason apart from staff preferences... Just as there are bad infection maps, there just as many bad 2v2 maps, minigames, etc. There are plenty good infection maps on FH that people have spent a long time making, you just have to look ;D I just did
Thanks psychoduck, I will definitely check out those maps you recommended. To Berb, perhaps my use of bogus was wrong. I have played Manifest both in halo 3 and in halo reach. It's a good concept and a well designed game. I just have a different view on infection I guess. I tend to think of Manifest as a minigame type deal. True Infection in my eyes should be based off of emergent gameplay with multiple routes of action. This is not to take away from games that are linear. However, I just think there is something special about certain infection maps that I can play dozens of times and still find something new to do in it and it be effective whether it be a new strategy, using another side of the map, using different routes to kill humans, etc. This is not to take away from linear infection games. They are great, but they have their limits and they fall prey to becoming stale over a long period of play. Games like Manifest are not "bogus", they just aren't what I am looking for. Sorry for the confusion.
I am an equally big fan of infection and it seems we share common values when it comes to judging them. I specialize in infection map making and am currently heading up the infection section of THFE. As a kickoff to this I recently hosted an infection week spotlighting my creations. In the future I hope to be able to spotlight all sorts of great infection maps and hope the videos will serve to help people like you discover community gems. Here is an example of the infection map I like to build. "zm_Hospital" [HD] - Halo Reach Forge Maps (THFE) - (Ep.34) - YouTube I will be looking for similar free roam creations to feature in the future.
